Kaoru Tada (1960–1999)

Premessa iniziale: Lo avevo già letto secoli fa solo che... tanto per cambiare non mi ricordo nulla 😅. Ricordo a grandi linee la storia ma non ricordo le differenze tra manga e anime. Ricordo che ai tempi avevo appena finito di rivedere l'anime, avevo scoperto l'esistenza del manga e mi aspettavo chissà che approfondimenti e invece.. niente. Rispetto all'anime e ai suoi mille mila episodi filler ricchi di momenti fangirleggiati il manga era decisamente più sobrio e questo aveva spezzato il mio cuore da fangirl. Essendo passato parecchio tempo ho deciso di rileggerlo questa volta PRIMA di rivedere l'anime. Non rivedendo la serie animata da un po' e non essendo al momento nel pieno del fangirleggiamento da shipper spero di poter essere più obiettiva e giudicare l'opera per quello che è.

Cosa mi è piaciuto:
- Go (Mirko): Go rispetto alla serie animata sembra essere molto più interessante. Mentre nell'anime sembrava che fosse già una super star affermata, una sorta di Damiano 2.0, in questo primo volumetto possiamo capire quanto il giovane non solo sia alle prime armi ma desideroso di sfondare nel panorama musicale. I beehive sono un gruppo emergente e si vede come Go ci tenga al suo lavoro, come voglia migliorare sempre più. Appare come un ragazzo comune e non privo di difetti. Uno studente che con fatica divide il suo tempo tra lo studio, la band e la cura del fratellino. Mi è piaciuto perché mi è parso più umano e ho anche apprezzato quel suo lato più spontaneo e un po' galletto. Nell'anime Mirko non esita a flirtare e fare il fenomeno ma ogni sua azione mi è sempre sembrata impostata. Troppo da "divo" e poco naturale. In questo caso invece mi è sembrato di vedere un ragazzo della porta accanto, un giovane che nonostante la maturità a tratti fa uscire il suo lato più giocoso e infantile. Insomma... Un personaggio che può piacere o meno secondo i gusti ma che fin da questo primo volume sa mettersi a nudo mostrandoci chiaramente le sue lotte interiori e i problemi legati all'amicizia con Satomi e i nuovi sentimenti romantici per Yakko.
- Satomi: nella serie è stato per me un rapporto di amore e odio. Alternavo momenti di amore folle (essendo ai miei occhi di bimba il più carino... Con quei capelli viola e fighissimi) ad altri di odio profondo per il suo atteggiamento da stronzo e menefreghista. Insomma... Un personaggio che mi ha fatto penare mentre qui... In questo primo volume l'ho amato. È super dolce e tenero. È molto deciso a esprimere i suoi sentimenti (al contrario della serie in cui rompeva spesso le palle senza motivo tra un "Ti amo... Forse... Magari.... Non so" ). È un ragazzo che ci appare maturo e responsabile e che ha atteggiamenti credibili. Ho empatizzato con lui e ho capito il perché di alcuni suoi comportamenti. Rispetto alla serie si fa amare e apprezzare e spero non peggiori strada facendo perché potrebbe senza problemi diventare uno dei miei personaggi preferiti.
- Marrabbio: nell'anime l'ho sempre odiato. Ero più piccola quindi meno empatica rispetto alle preoccupazioni di un genitore single e vedovo, ero molto più in fase "ma perché sgrida la figlia?! Ma perché non capisce che è innamorata?!" Un personaggio che non mi faceva chissà che piacere e che qui... Al momento....mi sta piacendo. Lo trovo meno pesante di quanto mi ricordassi. Lo vedo più realistico anche se "vecchio dentro e tradizionalista". Lo vedo meno violento e tiranno. Ha un suo pensiero "chiuso e bacchettone" ma almeno per il momento ha dimostrato di mettere la figlia al primo posto e di saperla consolare al momento giusto. Quando lei ritorna, dopo una notte fuori casa, non la prende subito a schiaffoni come nella serie ma cerca di essere più controllato, si preoccupa per il suo benessere vedendola sconvolta. Certo.. Ha anche i suoi momenti negativi... Rompe il disco del gruppo che ama la figlia durante un litigio ma... Non ho sentito quel legame tossico che si respirava nella serie. È un personaggio che ha le sue ombre ma che è anche in grado di ispirare simpatia. Un personaggio che spero mi possa stupire in positivo
- Yakko (Licia): Nella serie tv la odiavo. Era... Troppo! Troppo dolcetta, troppo tonta, troppo gentile, troppo angelica ecc ogni sua reazione mi sembrava esagerata e messa a caso. Mi infastidiva che avesse l'atteggiamento da monaca e salvatrice della patria. La piccola fiammiferaia che dopo uno schiaffo chiede scusa, perdono e pietà. Non la sopportavo e capivo ancora meno come Mirko avesse deciso di mettersi con lei senza limitarsi a vederla come la baby sitter/amica. Ho covato odio e rancore nei suoi confronti da bimba e ricordo ancora come alle elementari mi fossi messa a piangere quando mi avevano chiesto di interpretare Licia in una recita tra amici (si....eravamo amanti del teatro e ci divertivamo a interpretare scene dei nostri anime/cartoni/film preferiti) Insomma... Era l'incarnazione del mio trauma infantile 🤣 qui invece... Mi ha stupito. Ci sono momenti in cui è tonta ma l'ho vista (proprio come Go) molto più naturale. Al contrario dell'anime in cui sembra una beata angelica che sa fare tutto (pure compiere miracoli) qui è svampita, è incapace di cucinare pure un uovo, è sognatrice, è ingenua... È una ragazza della porta accanto. Una ragazza che volente o nolente si ritrova incasinata e contesa da due figoni da competizione. Non so se mi farà infuriare in futuro ma per ora... Mi sento di darle il beneficio del dubbio.

Cosa non mi è piaciuto
- Giuliano e Andrea: Sarà che sono drogata della serie anime, sarà che erano sempre presenti (e in un certo momento pure fastidiosi) che vederli in sottofondo… quasi mi turba. Sono poco presenti in questo primo volumetto e… meh… per ora mi sembrano veramente inutili e mi dispiace parecchio.
- Isuzu (Michela): già nella serie non stravedo per lei qui nel manga se possibile è ancora più fastidiosa. È odiosa, è insopportabile, è fin troppo fangirl per i miei gusti, è approfittatrice e… sembra destinata con il suo carattere a infastidire ancora di più Yakko rispetto alla serie. Spero migliori e cambi, spero venga un minimo presentata la sua storia con Eiji perchè se rimane così…. Per me è no!
- Eiji: Vi prego ditemi che nel manga il personaggio non si limita a fare il Meme vivente ricordando a Yakko il suo nome… vi prego….

Come inizio non è affatto male. Mi sembra molto carino e piacevole, molto meno sclerante e fastidioso rispetto alla serie (quanto era fastidiosa già solo la vocetta stridula di Andrea?!)

There is something about Itazura Na Kiss that always draws me back to the series with eager anticipation for the next volume. Perhaps it's the lovely clashes and moments between our heroine, the ditzy but strong-willed and determined Kotoko and the cooly aloof but secretly sweet Naoki - a true romance of contrasts. Or maybe it's the non-stop antics and crazy humor that Tada injects into every scene, humor that is overly abundant in this volume - see such scenes as Naoki and Yuko's failed date, the arrival of Kotoko's new romantic rival, and Kin-chan's attempts to 'rescue' Kotoko from Naoki while running through a terrible blizzard as just a few examples. No, it's all that and more - this is a shoujo series with heart. It draws you in with an unlikely pairing and slowly unfolds the two of them drawing closer to each other through their own efforts as well as the invisible hand that controls the circumstances of all shoujo manga. If you're not hooked at this point, volume three will be the volume to do it.

In this volume of Itazura Na Kiss, there's tons of things for Kotoko/Naoki fans to look forward to. Even as events seem to be gradually pulling them apart, they always seem to end up together in the end, whether it is at the school festival or during a blizzard that leaves the both of them snowed in at Naoki's new home. For the Kin-chan fans (there's gotta be some out there!) there are plenty of scenes of the strange Kin-chan doing his best to try and catch Kotoko's eye in any way possible. And then there is the university's anime club who have adopted Kotoko as their tennis superstar for their new animated project - a project that ends up being a wonderful homage to the sports and mahou shoujo genre anime from the seventies. It's a volume full of major events for everyone involved and contains stories both humorous and sweet. If you have been loving the slowly-advancing romance between Kotoko and Naoki like I have, you will certainly love this latest volume of INK - and be wondering when the next one is coming out! As Tada slowly advances the relationship between the two of them with both difficult scenarios and moments of good fortune, readers will be constantly looking forward to the day Naoki realizes his own feelings for Kotoko and tells her - although knowing Naoki, it probably won't be unless Kotoko can average above a 60 on her exams!

Kotoko of Class F has a secret: she's head over heels in love with Naoki of Class A! When she finally summons up the courage to give him a love letter, Naoki doesn't even read it. In fact, he even goes out of his way to tell Kotoko he doesn't like stupid girls. Ouch! It seems like Kotoko's heart has been broken and there's no hope in her and Naoki ever coming together - that is, until a natural disaster of fateful proportions intervenes. When Kotoko's family house is turned into rubble by an earthquake, her father has them all shacking up with an old school friend and his family - and this old friend's son is none other than Naoki! Whether it's trying to get past Naoki's cold demeanor or getting picked on by Naoki's little brother or studying like never before to get into college with her crush, Kotoko's life is harder than ever before. Can living under the same roof as Naoki improve Kotoko's chances of a whirlwind romance - or will Naoki just shoot her down again?

Itazura na Kiss (イタズラなKiss/Mischievous Kiss) is Kaoru Tada's most well-known shoujo series from the early nineties that has gained a huge fan following back in Japan and is considered one of the titles in its respective genre as a classic - and after reading DMP's release of the first seven chapters in omnibus format, it's not hard to see why it is so well-loved (or why its English language release was so anticipated by shoujo fanatics). It's a romance story full of drama and humor, all led by the impossible couple that is Kotoko and Naoki. I find myself loving the Kotoko/Naoki dynamic a lot - they squabble all the time and act more like rivals that love interests, but they also genuinely care about each other in the end, once you strip off all the bluster and posturing. Kotoko still is in love with Naoki and Naoki is slowly warming to Kotoko's energy and upbeat spirit. You can clearly see that living under the same roof has changed both characters in notable ways. Could one of those changes in the end be a romantic relationship? It's the slow but involving progress of their unusual high school courtship that will bring readers back to read more of their story together.

Overall, this manga is a welcome throwback to the shoujo era of the late eighties/early nineties, from the artwork down to the old school manga references in text. In a market when a lot of romantic manga is angsty dramatic messes that read like rejected Degrassi scripts, Itazura na Kiss is a lighthearted entry that succeeds in creating a suspenseful "will they or won't they?" style series while still maintaining its good humor. As the heart of the series, Kotoko is a strong-willed young woman who may still be in Class F with the rest of the academic failures but can still work hard when it comes to working to become Naoki's equal. If you enjoy a romantic push and pull story between two people as their feelings turn tender towards each other, you can't go wrong giving this series a go. I am looking forward to reading the next volume featuring those turbulent lovebirds Naoki and Kotoko - and once you finish the first book, I think you will too.… (lisätietoja)
