This was a very cute story about a young boy named Jack who is invited to a birthday party by the princess of his kingdom, and every child around is invited. The problem is Jack is very poor and cannot afford a present for the princess. So he starts to trade all of his most valuable processions to local people around his village and make a cake. He must travel a long distance, through many dangers, and eventually becomes the princesses best friend and he and his family are taken care of by the princess forever. A very sweet book all around. (

The theme of this book is that the best presents come from the heart. The Princess had grown tired of the fancy presents she was accustomed to receiving, yet was delighted with Jack's story. The Princess even honored Jack for his gift by allowing him to cut the royal cake for her party. This book could also be used in the classroom to encourage the art of oral storytelling.
