I still didn't care much for the survival skills information, but I thought the adventure aspect of the story was more enjoyable than what was in My Side of the Mountain. Many skills are described that Sam needs in order to find his sister and also to survive the adventure. Observation of the different tracks in the snow and what they mean in regards to his sister’s position is just one example of a correlation to a science process skill. Sam also uses contour lines of a map to determine how drastic of a drop the water fall would present. What makes this book so attractive is the way the environment is constantly at the forefront. Middle school aged kids typically enjoy exploration. This book would satisfy their urge while providing learning opportunities that can be tied to science skills and concepts.
