Less Than Zero
Vonini,
I read Less Than Zero and American Psycho. I also saw both films.
I also see you have references in this thread to A Clockwork Orange. I haven't read that novel (I want to soon though) but it is one of my favorite films.
That's my background.
Here's my opinion:
Americ ... Less Than Zero is definitely less graphic, although it is indeed bleak. I noticed you gave A Clockwork Orange five stars, so I'm guessing "raw violence and sadism" is acceptable as long as it's not described in excruciating detail? If so, Less Than Zero shouldn't be too offensive. Glamoram ... I have read both Less Than Zero and American Psycho in that order.
Less Than Zero left me feeling very down, it was so hopeless and so uncaring. There was one very shocking scene involving underage sex/rape/abuse but the rest of it was not so violent as American Psycho. It just ... ... 'unread'. I noticed there are more Ellis books on the list. Are they both like American Psycho or are Glamorama and Less than zero a bit milder perhaps? Saw Cannery Row, an All-Time Favorite, and thought I missed my chance... but I have also read Less Than Zero, so I offer up Bonfire of the Vanities... I have read American Psycho. Very disturbing book. How about Less Than Zero, by the same author? ... in with a measly 3 books this month. I have two more that are not finished yet so they will appear in the May list.

This novel really got me, the minimalistic writing, the whole ambiance, I love this book! (208p)

Luckily, I disliked Less Than Zero so much, I never picked up another book by him. At least he did it at the beginning before the reader had invested anything in the story, right? ... else by Atwood, but I wouldn't be opposed to it.
Put me down as also disliking anything by Bret Easton Ellis. Read Less Than Zero and American Psycho and just hated them! Less Than Zero just seemed too over the top and screamed of trying WAY too hard.
Anything by Jodi Picoult also ...
