More Mary Renault, The Bull from the Sea and The King Must Die and just for fun, my own Sappho Sings

Re #23: Oh yes, I second the motion! The Bull from the Sea was my very first Book of the Month Club selection when I was 14 years old. When the BOMC had a sale a few years later (they knew even then how to pry money from book addicts by cloaking their unsold stock as "Last Chance" items), I ...

Interesting. The person who introduced me to Tolkien had earlier given me copies of The King Must Die and The Bull from the Sea. Until now, that was the only connection I knew of.

... King Must Die I lent this to a friend who has now returned it. She wants to borrow the second part of Theseus' story The Bull from the Sea, which I bought recently but haven't read yet. So I'm going to read them both before I lend her The Bull from the Sea TBR pile: 63

... island of sheep by John Buchan Peter Duck by Arthur Ransome Love among the chickens by P.G. Wodehouse The bull from the sea by Mary Renault

Small correction: Fire from Heaven is the first of Renault's novels about Alexander. The King Must Die and The Bull from the Sea are about Theseus. The Mask of Apollo involves Plato's Academy and Greek theatre. Not that Mary Renault is one of my favorite authors or anything. ...

Fiction: Mary Renault's novels about Ancient Greece take the gods and myths seriously. The King Must Die and The Bull from the Sea deal with Theseus, the Minotaur, the Amazons, and much more.

Love The Bull from the Sea and The King Must Die they are two of my favorites and I agree about the old home thing. The Persian Boy also from Renault is an excellent book.

#144 Hera - may I urge you to try The king must die and then The Bull from the sea next. Two of my all time tops which are numbered amongst the 12 books I will take with me into the Old Peoples Home. If I'm spared.

... Die and The Bull From the Sea. Mary Renault does a great job on ancient Greece. We used The King Must Die and The Bull from the Sea as "guidebooks" on our 1st trip to Greece. Standing at the appropriate spot, we'd re-read the account of events that happened there. Years later, ...

... hard life would be like. The Thrall's Tale was an eyeopener, too. Some of my favorite semi-historical reads are The Bull from the Sea and The King Must Die. As these are more based on myth, I'm not sure they qualify, but they are great novels. Renault's The Persian Boy is also ...
