Interesting. The person who introduced me to Tolkien had earlier given me copies of The King Must Die and The Bull from the Sea. Until now, that was the only connection I knew of. Finished No. 5, going back to read more of No. 1. No. 4 finished. Now starting:

Love The Bull from the Sea and The King Must Die they are two of my favorites and I agree about the old home thing. The Persian Boy also from Renault is an excellent book. #144 Hera - may I urge you to try The king must die and then The Bull from the sea next.
Two of my all time tops which are numbered amongst the 12 books I will take with me into the Old Peoples Home.

Mary Renault does a great job on ancient Greece. We used The King Must Die and The Bull from the Sea as
"guidebooks" on our 1st trip to Greece. Standing at the appropriate spot, we'd re-read the account of events that happened there. Years later, ... ... Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom and The Pale Horseman.
I have Mary Renault's The King Must Die and The bull From the Sea in my "to be read" pile along with The Game of Kings.

Some of my favorite semi-historical reads are The Bull from the Sea and The King Must Die. As these are more based on myth, I'm not sure they qualify, but they are great novels. Renault's The Persian Boy is also ...
