Of the many lost and ill-fated expeditions into uncharted Amazonia, that of explorer Percy Fawcett, who disappeared without a trace with his son in 1925 while searching for a forgotten civilization, has undoubtedly raised the most questions and inspired the greatest number of subsequent search missions (many of which were also disastrous). Nearly 100 years later Journalist David Grann picks up where previous investigations left off, determined to uncover the mystery of Fawcett's disappearance once and for all. I love a good story of survival, adventure and archaeology, and this was an interesting series of events I hadn't heard of previously. The deep Amazon sounds like hell on Earth, and I find it astounding that many of these explorers survived and had any desire to return. Though I found the ending to be somewhat anticlimactic after all the buildup, it was overall an interesting read. 4.5 stars Even though this is a nonfiction book, it reads like an adventure story, great writing. I really liked it, and I'm looking forward to seeing what to do with it in the movie. As promising as the premise is (lost cities in the Amazon! Gutsy explorers! etc), the Lost City of Z is a dud. At the end of the day, we just don't know what happened to Fawcett, and the story of his life before his last expedition just didnt interest me either (he spends his time bouncing between being miserable in the Amazon and being unhappy in the British Empire.) Some people might enjoy reading about Grann's trip to the Amazon, but I'd advise you skip this one. (I wrote this on my phone, so excuse any spelling/grammar issues) This is an excellent book about the people & history of the Brazilian Amazon forest through the eyes of Col. Fawcett who thrived there and the modern search for the city of Z & the Fawcetts who never returned, including how people can die in a myriad of horrific ways there & how to prepare human meat (yea). Continually interesting and far better than the movie, which gave an inaccurate & boring portrayal of Fawcett. Narration is a bit monotone at the beginning of the audiobook but did improve. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu
Mukaelmia:The Lost City of Z [2016 film] (tekijä: James Gray)
After stumbling upon a hidden trove of diaries, New Yorker writer David Grann set out to solve "the greatest exploration mystery of the twentieth century": what happened to British explorer Percy Fawcett. In 1925 Fawcett ventured into the Amazon to find an ancient civilization. For centuries Europeans believed the world's largest jungle concealed the glittering El Dorado. Thousands had died looking for it, leaving many convinced that the Amazon was truly inimical to humankind. But Fawcett had spent years building his scientific case. Captivating the imagination of millions, he embarked with his 21-year-old son, determined to prove that this ancient civilization--which he dubbed "Z"--existed. Then he and his expedition vanished. Fawcett's fate--and the clues he left behind--became an obsession for hundreds who followed him. As Grann delved deeper into Fawcett's mystery, and the greater mystery of the Amazon, he found himself irresistibly drawn into the "green hell."--From publisher description. "Explorers are not, perhaps, the most promising people with whom to build a society. Indeed, some might say that explorers become explorers precisely because they have a streak of unsociability and a need to remove themselves at regular intervals as far as possible from their fellow men." (
