This novel of history and fantasy weaves together the Napoleonic wars and the mysteries of Venice, punctuated by the stories the characters tell about themselves and others. Quite enchanting.

Magical realism set in wartime, told with a delicate lacing of philosophy, religion and perfectly-flawed romance. I can't recommend this book highly enough. ( )

Samenv.: Henri, soldaat-kok in het Franse leger, verliest eerst zijn hart aan Napoleon, vervolgens aan de Venetiaanse gondeliersdochter Villanelle. Maar de keizer wil van hem niet meer dan een ononderbroken reeks goed doorbraden kippen, terwijl Villanelle in hem slechts een broer kan zien: haar eigen hart heeft ze (letterlijk) vergokt in het casino. Tussen de bedrijven door ijlen de helden van de ene exotische locatie naar de andere (Parijs, Moskou, Venetië, het casino, het gekkenhuis) en maken wij kennis met menig curieus personage. Maar het geheel vermag nooit echt te boeien; een vergelijking met bijvoorbeeld het wat stijl en thematiek betreft verwante werk van Angela Carter valt duidelijk in Winterson's nadeel uit.
Samenv.: Een bediende van Napoleon, die is aangesteld om te voldoen aan de passie van de keizer voor kip, weet hoe belangrijk passies zijn en volgt ook zelf zijn hart. Als hij met het Franse leger in Rusland is, besluit hij te deserteren met een collega. Bij hen voegt zich een zeer bijzondere Venetiaanse vrouw die ook altijd haar eigen weg gaat. Nadat zij in Venetië zijn aangekomen, volgt zij haar hart, wat leidt tot een moord die met name voor haar vriend heel ingrijpende gevolgen heeft. Jeanette Winterson gebruikt in haar werk historische feiten op een zeer eigenzinnige manier. Ook in deze roman heeft ze feit en fictie heel origineel vermengd tot een uiterst boeiend, en knap geheel met verschillende lagen. ( )

The Passion, like so many of Winterson's books, feels like it will break your heart because it is so startlingly intimate, beautiful in a candidly biographical way that is wrenching to read. The biographies are of two very similar people, both looking and resisting their lost loves that continually burn away everything that is left of the protagonists. ( )
