I must say that I absolutely adored this book. It was the first book where I actually could relate to the main character. Me and Bianca are very similar so it was nice reading something and then picturing me in that situation. Anyways the book was amazing and I would definitely would recommend it. It isn't the fastest book *in my opinion* but it isn't boring either. I must also applaud Claudia Gray for making some fantastic plot twists. Sadly I read some parts ahead so I kind of realized them before I read the book. It was a bit disappointing but It made me look at her writer more carefully while reading. It was seriously well done and written. It's fabulous work for a debut in my opinion. Of course not all the subjects are covered in the first book, but I bet they'll continue in the second book: "Stargazer" which I'm excited and looking forward to reading. I don't have any complaints about this story. It was well written, great plot twists, not boring, and had some great, funny dialogue. The only thing I would ever think of suggesting is making the chapters a bit shorter. I hate reading long chapters, but that's just my thought. Anyways I hope you enjoyed my latest review and you'll go read this amazing book by Claudia Gray. ( )

Too much like too many other, "there's something strange about this boarding school" book ( )
  GaylDasherSmith | Nov 18, 2009 |
Reviewed by Amber Gibson for TeensReadToo.com

Evernight Academy is a secluded boarding school, tucked away in the woods where its secrets will not be uncovered. Its secrets are prolific, lasting since its founding centuries ago. While it may seem like simply an elite boarding school, Evernight is much more than that, serving as a haven for some of the world's most hated and hunted. Vampires.

Bianca is none too happy when her parents become teachers at Evernight and enroll her in the spooky school. There is something strange about the other students; they are all too poised, too confident, and too beautiful to be real. Bianca knows that she will find no true friends in that crowd, and she resigns herself to a lonely year spent with her books.

When she meets Lucas, a fellow student who defies the mainstream, Bianca knows that she has found a rare friend. Lucas is gallant, courageous, and friendly. Soon, the two grow close, and Bianca can see herself falling head-over-heels for Lucas, with nothing she can do about it. Mostly, their relationship is tender and caring, but the occasional spat foreshadows a danger lurking in their future. Lucas and Bianca are no ordinary students, and both are hiding secrets from the other. When their differences surface, their love appears doomed. The forces conspiring against them are far more powerful than Bianca and Lucas could ever imagine.

Lies upon lies abound, and Bianca does not know who to turn to as she finds herself caught between a life she has always known and a chance for love. Who can she trust? One rash decision could change her life and the lives of those she loves forever.

Claudia Gray spins a gripping Gothic romance, weaving in threads of the supernatural and the modern. Bianca is a complex character, juggling her responsibilities to her family while trying to follow her heart. Those who enjoy vampire tales will be thrilled with EVERNIGHT for painting a comprehensive picture of vampires, showing vampire life from Bianca's unique perspective and not relegating vampires to a strictly villainous position. Gray does not stereotype her characters or pigeonhole them into traditional roles, letting the reader decide for themselves what it means to be "good" and "evil."

EVERNIGHT is an excellent drama that will leave readers longing for more, but some secrets may never be revealed. ( )

I really enjoyed Evernight. It was a quick, though mostly superficial, read that definitely kept me wanting more-- and it's much better than a lot of the teen paranormal books that are around these days. Bianca is written well and easy to relate to, while the romance is just enough to be satisfying without being laid on too thick. Not one of my favorite books, but closer to the top than a lot of the other teen vampire books I've read recently. ( )

An enjoyable young adult vampire novel. I thought this was a cut above some of the other books of this genre. The characters were a bit more interesting and sympathetic, the world-building was interesting, and the plot was well-paced, as it built up to a revelation that had unfortunately been spoilt for me by reading the back cover of the sequel. I don't like Bianca - she's boring, spineless, and disloyal to anyone that's not Lucas. I don't like Lucas - he's a hypocrite, boring, and not Balthazar. ( )

This is a weird book, the whole vampire thing just felt wrong. I'm sure this will be a big hit with the Twilight crowd; but I just couldn't get into it. The love story will be enough to interest the teenage girls ( )

Bianca has been uprooted from everything she knows by her parents to attend the exclusive boarding school Evernight Academy, where her parents have been employed as teachers. Having gotten there, she feels she needs to get away and that she doesn't belong. This is until she meets Lucas, a mysterious boy who is also new to the academy. They become inseparable - that is until family secrets are revealed and everything goes awry.

I found this book was a clever twist on the teen vampire genre with a star crossed romance entwined. Brilliantly written, I recommed this book to Twilight fans and avid fantasy readers.

Readers Annotation:
Bianca’s parents uproot her from her life that she has previously known to attend a boarding school where they will be teachers. She realizes that not everything is as it appears on the surface at the school. She goes to a meeting with some of the school leaders and realizes afterwards that the wine she was drinking was really blood.
Plot Summary:
Bianca is moved to a preppy boarding school so her parents can be teachers there. She meets Lucas a new student like herself and becomes instant friends. She goes to an assembly with some of her upper classmates and realizes that the wine they are drinking is actually blood from a willing donor. The school is actually a school for vampires to learn about modern culture and technology, they just let humans into the school this year. One of the rules of the school is that the students can’t drink from the humans. The plot has some interesting twists, after Bianca falls for Lucas it comes out that she is a vampire herself and that Lucas is part of an anti-vampire faction sent to infiltrate the school to find out its secrets. Lucas escapes from the school and Bianca helps the teachers track him.
Evaluation:
This book was very suspenseful with lots of plot twists that were very unexpected. The main ones being that the two main characters are on different teams, Bianca is a vampire and Lucas an anti-vampire faction member. All in all it was a very good read that kept me glued to the book. The only thing I didn’t like was the protagonist’s selection of a boyfriend. She kept dating Lucas despite how strange he acted and that he was trying to turn her against her parents and friends. He tried to isolate her and control her. There is also a handsome vampire named Balthazar that is kind, courteous, and treats her respectfully. I would have rather she chose Balthazar as her love interest.

Hey!

Also seehr einladend.

Bianca Olivier’s parents are new teachers at the boarding school Evernight Academy, and Bianca just knows that she has to get out of Evernight. The students are distant, sophisticated, and creepy; Bianca feels like she doesn’t belong.

Then she meets Luke. He makes her feel complete, and it’s not long before they are inseparable. But Luke acts mysterious sometimes, and Bianca can’t figure him out…until disaster strikes. Suddenly, old family secrets are revealed, and the two young lovers’ lives may be in grave danger.

The first reaction I had when I finished this book was, wow, I’m glad it’s over. That doesn’t bode well for the first sentence of a review, but I’m going to try to explain why EVERNIGHT gave me a headache and had me rolling my eyes through every page.

Don’t get me wrong: there are some good parts to this book. I really liked the concept of a boarding school for vampires; the gothic towers and rooms of Evernight reminded me vaguely of Hogwarts, which was cool. The idea that Gray presents readers of a world where immortal vampires are constantly struggling to fit in, and need to be taught technology, was intriguing, although not as well developed as it could’ve been.

I really liked the tension between vampires and the human vampire hunters, even though the motivations for the vampire hunters’ actions were not well explained. And finally, I was a fan of the huge twist halfway through the book that everyone likes to talk about. Books with unreliable narrators are difficult to pull off, and Bianca’s revelation to us was shocking, yet satisfying at the same time.

However, EVERNIGHT fell flat in all other aspects. Bianca was difficult to like: she constantly feels the need to tell readers things about herself and the world around her, things that we didn’t need to know—like the fact that she’s supposedly shy, even though there’s no indication of shyness beyond the general awkwardness of adolescence among a new crowd—or could have inferred in the hands of a more skilled writer. Similarly, none of the other characters were interesting, least of all Luke. I rolled my eyes at the stilted dialogue and forced attraction between the two, felt my eyelids start to slide shut at the unbearably slow pace of the novel.

I read EVERNIGHT for the express purpose of finding out what that plot twist was, but it wasn’t worth it. Lovers of vampire lit might be interested in the world that Gray has tried to spin, but newcomers to the genre would be better off with other vampire series, such as Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy. Bianca’s the new student and fish out of water at exclusive Evernight Academy. But things aren’t as they seem, not even Lucas, the hot boy who seems equally exiled to the fringes. I know the author, so I’m biased, but I found this a clever twist on the teen vampire genre, more clever as I thought about it. ( )

Lucas is a bit strange, and Bianca a bit weak but the book improves as it goes along. Not Twilight, but fans of Twilight will like this - I am hoping Bianca develops a bit more strength as the series continues. ( )

Bianca’s parents assume new teaching positions at Evernight Academy, forcing her to leave everything familiar behind. Despite there persistence that she needs to give Evernight a chance, Bianca can’t help but feel like she doesn’t belong. Until she meets another loner, Lucas.Bianca feels like she can tolerate Evernight with Lucas at her side. Bianca unknowingly reveals her true self to Lucas, ultimately revealing the mystery behind Evernight. Not only is Evernight an academic academy it is also a haven for vampires. But Bianca isn’t the only one keeping secrets. Once Bianca discovers the true intentions of Lucas’s presence at Evernight, she feels more than betrayed. Will their bond be able to stand against the forces that threaten to keep them apart.*For those of you who have read Evernight, and you are questioning who is this Lucas person? I talked to Claudia and Jared was changed to Lucas at the last minute!I started reading Evernight, and I couldn’t put it down until I was finished! Now I find myself longing for the sequel! Evernight will be an easy favorite to fans of vampire lore. It’s a fascinating tale of a mysterious academy, forbidden romance, and dark secrets! Gray's writing is refreshing and smooth. The characters are well developed and intriguing. I’m hoping to learn more about the vampire characters and their lives, possibly in the next novel. The small glimpse into Balthazar’s life was more than interesting. The plot, despite the growing number of vampire books and vampire books that are centered around academies, was actually very original. Evernight’s official release is set for May 27, 2008. I recommend that you get a copy for yourself! ( )

synopsis

Bianca wants to escape. She's been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn't fit in. Then she meets Lucas. He's not the "Evernight type" either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful--even when it comes to caring about him. ""I couldn't stand it if they took it out on you,"" he tells Bianca, ""and eventually they would."" But the connection between Bianca and Lucas can't be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed.

Evernight Academy is an exclusive private school with gothic architecture and unexplainable sense of foreboding. Sixteen year old Bianca wants to run away when her parents take teaching positions and move there. She meets the mysterious Lucas in the forest whom she falls for with extreme intensity. Bianca is a small town girl, who is inexperienced and naive and has a hard time fitting in at Evernight. She finds allies among other outcasts, but especially so in Lucas, an angry and overprotective boy who makes one wonder what secrets of his own he is keeping.
I enjoyed Evernight and immediately read the sequel Stargazer after finishing the first book. However, it really seemed odd to me that the author waited until the middle of the book to drop a major bombshell regarding vampires. I think it's strange to have a narrator keep something like that from the reader and then all of a sudden constantly refer to it as if you had that understanding between you from page one. It should've been revealed from the beginning in my opinion. My only other gripe was the intensity of how Bianca fell so instantaneously for Lucas. She merely looked at him and was madly in love. That seemed a little cheesy to me but I understand being a teenager and meeting your first real "love". I just wish it had been explained better. In my opinion, Balthazar was a way more appealing suitor with a more multifaceted character, and I kept hoping things would turn in his favor. Other than that, I did enjoy Evernight. There are also a lot of unanswered questions about Evernight Academy itself, and it's unusual mix of students that I am extremely eager to come to the bottom of as well. Bianca's relationship with her family is another strong pull of the novel and should be interesting to see how the characters grow and evolve.

I enjoyed this book. There were a few creative ideas but the majority of the book was very similar to most of the YA Vampire book out there. It really bugged me how we didn’t know that Bianca knew she was a vampire until half way through the book. I did read the second book. I have no clue why they were split into two books. If you are into vampire books I would recommend this one. ( )

Synopsis: From Amazon
Sixteen-year-old Bianca is dreading her first day at Evernight Academy, where her parents have taken teaching positions. Then she meets handsome outsider Lucas, for whom she falls with quick intensity. Everyone at Evernight has secrets, even Bianca, and as her romance deepens, she risks revealing the otherworld identity of Evernight’s glamorous population, even as she wonders if Lucas, too, is hiding something.

My Thoughts: PLOT SPOILERS BEWARE!
I initially had ALOT to say about this book, but now I can only put it into a few points:

- The Writing Style - I was not fussed at all. The entire book felt a little like an MSN conversation, minus the chat speak of course. Pointless rambling, conversations that are unimportant to the context of the book, and if they were important, they certainly weren't done right. Nothing any of the characters said had any impact, because it was so... generic and americanized in this way that just didn't suit the novel. Other than speech, descriptions weren't a strong point either.

- The Characters - I didn't like alot of the names. They just didn't suit the characters. Here we had a desperate blend of old-timey Vampire names, and new age 'cool' names. It just seemed such a desperately random mix.

Bianca - was typically the instant beautiful quirky outcast that none of the rich students liked or wanted to like. She bored me to tears because of how typical her character was.

- The Plot - For what was actually happening, there was no where near enough impact or emphasis on what I thought was important. Alot of it felt a little too convenient, if you know what I mean. It was, really, like this: Bianca bit Lucas, found out she was a vampire, and it was suddenly like 'Oh, okay, whatever'. It just seemed the most naturally convenient and every day thing to happen to someone.
There was just an overall LACK of structure. Everything seemed to just fall conveniently into place, as if there was no initial planning of this book and what was to happen.
And although, I admit, the only other Vampire book I've read is Twilight, which I adore, the whole Vampire thing in Evernight is just done so horribly.

The Good Points:

I didn't entirely hate this book, okay? There were a couple of good things:
- The end twist - where Lucas turns out to be a member of the Black Cross, and has been tricking them the entire time. I did not expect this, and I was rather grateful for it, actually.
- Erich died.
- And for some reason, TOTALLY UNEXPLAINABLE, I want to read the next book. I think just because I absolutely hate seeing a story just left in the middle. I need a proper end, damnit!

Overall Rating:
3 out 10

Possibly the lowest rating I've ever given, but as you can see, there were few redeeming qualities about this book. ( )

I have mixed feelings about this book. I picked it up actually because I read the blurb about Stargazer and it sounded great. While Evernight was not bad it did not really grab me and pull me into the story. Bianca’s and Lucas’s characters were ok but it was the supported cast that caught my interest. I really would like to learn more about Balthazar and I really like Vic and Raquel.

The twist of who Lucas really is was interesting and what Bianca is hiding about Evernight from Lucas was a shock. So I do want to see how this affects Luke’s and Bianca’s relationship. I will still pick up Stargazer since the concept of this series sounds exciting and I know the first books in series generally do have to do a lot of set up. So I am withholding judgment on the series until I read Stargazer. Sorry for the wishy-washy review but I really don’t feel strongly one way or another. ( )

Evernight is a YA vampire romance published last year, and at first glance it seems very much like a Twilight knock-off. However, while it may be a read-alike, it's not just a knock-off. It's an amazing, amazing, amazing addition to the genre, that far more people should have heard of by now. (Also, if you haven't read any summaries or Amazon reviews, DON'T. They'll give things away that you don't want to get until you're reading.)

Bianca is a new student at Evernight, a creepy Gothic boarding school where all the other students seem to be beautiful and rich. On her first day there she meets Lucas, a bronze-haired boy who is not only gorgeous, but seems to feel as out of place as she does. He's also got some anger issues and he's moody and secretive. They fall in love. There's also a third romance interest. I know, it sounds familiar. But bear with me for a few chapters.

Evernight knocks over all the tropes and cliches you're thinking of. I love Twilight, but I freely admit having some issues with it, and Evernight deals with all of those issues exactly the way I'd been wishing something would.

My favorite aspect of the book is the plot. It's perfectly crafted, and I'm in awe of the way Claudia Gray is in such control over it without making herself evident in every encounter. There's a lot of mystery and activeness here, for those of you who don't like nothing but romance, along with some delicious romantic intensity, and a few plot turns that will keep you up past your bedtime.

There's a variety of characters present and all of them are very real and organic. None of them fell into the cliches they might have been prone to, and their interactions were also very believable. (I don't know about you, but I hate those books where the characters are just talking heads. Everything these characters do is based directly on their motivations.) There's a lot of subtlety here, and Gray doesn't need to spell things out for us for us to understand them.

This is a great read for anyone who likes the genre (YA/horror/vampire/romance.) ( )

As the title of this review indicates, I'm assuming this is the first book of a series, and as such it worked for me. If by some chance it's not, then shame on both Ms Gray and her editors for allowing the book to end before the story does. Let's assume the former is the case and we have more to look forward to. And I, for one, will happily read more, a fact which surprises me somewhat.

I've always been a fan of the vampire tale. Yes, this is a spoiler, but by the time you finish the prologue the "V" word is already in play, so let's just get it out here in the open. Too many reviewers suggest that Stephanie Meyer fans might well enjoy Claudia Gray, and yet get all coy about saying exactly why. Well, it's vampires. And it's young people. And as far as I'm concerned that's where the comparison can end because to be honest I think Ms Gray writes rings around Ms Meyers whose popularity stumps me.

Bianca has been brought to a very exclusive prep school by her parents who have taken jobs there as teachers. We know right from the start that Bianca hates the place. It's creepy and cheerless, and by the time the school year starts and she meets some of her classmates, she realizes that they belong at Evernight even if she feels she doesn't. However, she also meets Lucas Ross right at the beginning of term, and falls hard for him. Literally as well as figuratively, and in the manner of young women who have never felt the tug of romance before. She can't stop thinking about him even when he seems to have forgotten all about her.

Theirs is an on-again, off-again relationship that plays out against a strongly telegraphed background of vampire shenanigans. Most of the students aren't like Bianca or Lucas. The mere mention of the word "vampire" in a literature class brings some interesting responses from the class. It's not a surprise that there will be some kind of eventual confrontation between vampire and non-vampire, but it's how we get there that is a bit surprising.

I don't really want to post any other potential spoilers here, so I'm not going to go into much detail about the how or why of it. Rather I will say that the interactions between characters are not only interesting but telling. There is far more to each character than we've been allowed to see in this book, which is the main reason why I would feel cheated if this turned out to be a stand-alone novel. These people need more time to develop within the context of the story. The triangle needs to play itself out, and I'm certain that most of the secondary characters have interesting stories to tell. There is, in fact, something about this book which reminded me of Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go." I did have the sense that we're seeing a world in which the options are surprisingly few for many of the characters.

So whether you read this because you love vampires, or Stephanie Meyers, or teen romance, or just a good read, I don't think you can really go wrong. ( )
