The second trade in Vertigo’s Fables series. As fun and enjoyable as number one. Artwork remaining sensational. Very enjoyable. ( )

This is a great series. Willingham really knows how to put a twist on something and make it interesting and unpredictable.

This volume introduces the Farm, and it's not like I expected. From the hints in the first book I kind of expected it to be prison-like, but really it seems kind of nice.

The story and art were excellent, but I'll be looking forward to more city-oriented stuff. ( )

Animal Farm was good, but in my humble opinion, not as good as the first book in the series.

The art is, as expected, top notch. I enjoy the colors, the inking, the overall feel of the book itself. The storyline itself... not so much. As some other reviewers have stated, Animal Farm doesn't have quite the same connectability as the first in the series.

That said, I still enjoyed it. The continuing antagonism between Rose Red and Snow White is shaping up nicely for the rest of the series. The inclusion of non-fable characters (like Weyland Smith and the Jungle Book cast) is enjoyable.

This book is very obviously based off of Orwell's Animal Farm and Golding's Lord of the Flies. If you haven't read those, you're probably going to be missing out on a lot of the references made during the story. Still enjoyable if you haven't read them, but you may be left wondering, why the pig's head on a stick? Why the pigs as leaders at all?

Goldilocks is a nice little touch all on her own. The implied (ok, not implied, stated) bestiality between her and Little Bear squicked me out, but added to the overall creep factor of the character. Her rantings were quite psychopathic.

My biggest complaint? Not enough Bigby Wolf. More of him in later installments please. ( )

Basic Reason for Beginning: Well, I read the first volume and wasn't sold. I picked up the second when I was in the comic store because... Well, because I like the premise and what I've read and heard of the series has me wanting read on and see what the big deal is.
Basic Reason for Finishing: Er... I started it? And it's not terribly long? And I kind of wanted to know how things played out with Snow and Red?

Full review here.

Book Rereadability: Maybe, very maybe if I ever read George Orwell. I'm afraid the references to that went beyond me, having only gleaned information of his books from secondary and tertiary sources, and those not many.
Author Rereadability: I dunno. Fables and me just don't seem to be clicking. I'll definitely give it at least one more book, though.
Recommendation: Honestly? I didn't like this instalment of the Fables books at all. And I don't believe that's all down to just lacking knowledge of what appears to be the bulk of the referenced material. If the mystery aspect of the first Fables book is what drew you to read on, don't expect this to be the same. Doesn't even share the same feel as the previous book. It introduces the farm, just as the previous book introduced Fabletown. ( )

An excellent second volume in this series of fairytale characters in today's New York, featuring Goldilocks as revolutionary leader exploiting dissension among the Three Little Pigs and between Snow White and Rose Red. I shall get more of these. ( )
