I walked out with Raiders and Rebels, The Hobbit, Between the Wingtips, and a cookbook. (This was, of course, in addition to the book for my friend.) Curse the clearance section! At least I got a good deal. I think I'll make an effort to finish the swedish edition of The hobbit, for my comparative reread. Then I think I'll pick up either Sailing from Byzantium or The search for the perfect language. Just finished The Hobbit. Now reading the 1st book of the series Warriors Into the Wild by Evan Hunter which is a YA series my 12 yr old Granddaughter has been reading avidly. I tried to get her to read some of the Redwall series which i've read quite a few of & she asked me to read ... ... Adventures of a young knight in Unauwen and Dagonaut, two fictional counries in the time of the middle ages.

I don't think I can add something new about this book ;-) ... which he talks about in great detail in the commentary. Right now i like to believe that PJ & GDT will do justice by The Hobbit. 8^) ... that's too detailed can be hard for me to read regardless of whether its fiction or non-fiction. I tried reading Tolkien's The Hobbit but couldn't finish it, the same for The Wolf: The ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species. But, especially for the non-fiction, I've always figured it ... ... authors such as Tom Clancy and John Grisham rarely write above a level 6.5. Even Tolkien's books are in that level. The Hobbit is the highest ranking Tolkien book we have, and it is a 6.6. ... the series. If you own a Boxed Set and I own The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King (+/- The Hobbit) - as far as I am concerned we own the same books, being in a boxed set doesn't add any information. Please read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.
To whoever picks for me - please pick something tagged "to read." ... Tolkien put things together in what was, at the time, a new & different way. Since the original publication of The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings many have attempted to copy him but many have also fallen short. I did not read Tolkien until i was in my 60s but had not at that time ... ...
No problem, everybody has different tastes (thank goodness!!!, how vanilla the world would be otherwise). But Tolkien, The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings especially, have a very, very special place in my heart. The other books are a delight too, but those 2 (4?) are foremost. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The group is named after one of the pubs in the trilogy. If you haven't read them, I highly recommend 'em. They're great! ... Kenneth Grahame because it is so delightfully written and portrays both people and animals in a loving light. . .
2. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien because it is a terrific romp through Middle Earth, and b/c I can't use up all my choices by taking the trilogy. . .
3. Good Omens by ... IMHO there's a vast gap between Hobbit and LotR on one hand, and all the books published posthumously on the other. Namely, the narrative in the two first-named flows. The others are written in such a high-born, old-fashioned register that I have the greatest difficulty picking up the book again ... ...and as the swedish translation of The Hobbit that I own seems to be a word by word translation of the UK original (thus not managing to translate the poetry and tone of said original, as sentences etc. aren't built in the same way in swedish) I felt I had to take yet another break... so 5 ... I just finished Well of Ascension - felt like I had to put something in between my two readings of The hobbit or it'd feel a bit repetitive.
I really enjoyed reading it - now I only have to wait for the last part of the trilogy! ... children until they explained they acted it all out with Beanie Babies to make it more age-appropriate. I just stuck with The Hobbit until my kids were old enough to read TLOR on their own.
It is a challenge choosing material for young high-level readers, especially if they are not also ... From The Hobbit (you'd think I would have found all the new vocabulary in that one already, but no!)

The Hobbit would still be under copyright.
It will be subject to UK law, since it was first published here. The law here is that copyright subsists in a work of literature for 70 years after the author's death. Tolkien died in 1973, so we're exactly halfway from then until the date ... ... in return, probably books I don't want to read (swedish best seller list - yuk).

Now, I'm not a Tolkien fan at all. The Hobbit is my favorite book, partly because I read it so many times as a kid, but I didn't bother reading The Lord of the Rings until after I saw The Fellowship of ... ... than it is to hand-code links to works, but fortunately work touchstones are more likely to work than author touchstones: The Hobbit. (Single-word titles appear to be least likely to touchstone properly, hence the difficulty with "Twilight" and "Eclipse" above, and also-reported problems with ... ... you! I didn't like the mom character and the book upset me. Yeesh. I was much more worked up over Tae's consideration of The Hobbit (horrible book). Did I hate Jamie for God of Small Things? I'm involved in a major sewing project so listened to The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde and the BBC's version of The Hobbit. Today I start on Pride and Prejudice read by Joanna Lumley. After that will be Never Have Your Dog Stuffed. I think I'll go with The Hobbit from J.R.R. Tolkien. I just finished rereading The Hobbit -- Tolkein is the standard by which I judge all other fantasy novels. I am about two thirds of the way through A Storm of Swords by George R R Martin.
