In this compilation of early-American documents, formerly published as
Our Sacred Honor, the most widely known touter of "virtues" in the United States enlists Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, and other "founding fathers" (along with Abigail Adams) to celebrate principles such as piety, justice, and patriotism. Bennett's editorializing is kept to a minimum, however, and does not overly impede this rich stream of primary documents from the Revolutionary War and the formation of the American government.
