The book started off well but degenerated into a domestic tale dwelling on the various daughters of the McCosh family, in particular the marriage of Rosemary and Daniel Pitt. Add in a weird foray into faith and even psychic phenomenon, the story feels like a trudge that never ends. ( )

I had high hopes that I would like this novel as much as I did Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and for once my expectations did not let me down! De Bernieres moved away from his focus on South American politics (not a subject I care for, or enjoyed in his novels previously) and back to the European arena during and after the wars. He follows much the same pattern as in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, just swapping the Italian/Greek campaigns of World War II for the Western Front and England during the Great War, so readers will likely not be shocked by the plot line or character developments but still be well entertained. His deep understanding of human nature allows De Bernieres to present a broad spectrum of reactions to the Great War - which spans from the young men eager to serve their country, to those on the home front who are silently stoic about the whole endeavour and refuse to change along with the rest of the world - which truely makes this a heartfelt novel that I'm sure anyone can connect with. I don't really want to get into the details of what makes this book such a great read, since I don't want to ruin a single scene, but suffice it to say that this book is definitely making my top 5 of 2015! This felt like a huge read. I like books that are set in historical times, and this is set very well into the era around the First World War. The way we move through time with the central characters and watch them grow is very enjoyable. ( )

Het verhaal vertrekt in de rustige tijden vlak na het sterven van Queen Victoria. Rosie McCosh groeit samen met haar die zussen op in een idyllisch gezin in de countryside ten zuiden van Londen. Met hun buurjongens de grbroeders Pitt en Pendennis vormen ze de 'Pals', vrienden voor het leven. Aan hun zorgeloze jeugd komt abrupt een einde als de Eerste Wereldoorlog uitbreekt.De gebroeders Pendennis vechten alledrie als soldaat aan het helse front in Frankrijk en Vlaanderen. Daniël Pitt, altijd een waaghals, wordt gevechtspiloot. Rosie en haar zus Ottilie nemen dienst als verpleegster.
In die vier oorlogsjaren verliezen sommigen van hen hun leven, anderen hun dierbaren of hun geloof, maar alles verliezen ze hun onschuld. We volgen ze in de loopgraven, in luchtgevechten, in veldhospitalen. In de nasleep van de oorlog, terwijl de moderne wereld wankel oprijst, moeten ze elk een nieuw evenwicht vinden.
Vloeiend en helder proza, het verhaal wordt in opeenvolgende hoofdstukjes verteld, telkens het wel en wee van een van de talrijke personages belichtend. Vlotte lectuur, geschreven met een warme pen en humoristische toets. ( )
