Series note: This series is a spin-off of Mayhem in Mayfair and several characters from the 3rd book appear here. Moreover, the hero, Alaric, is first introduced in the prequel novella, The Widow Vanishes, which should be read first.

When Alaric McLead, Duke of Strathaven, is accused of a crime he did not commit, he is determined to clear his name and find the real culprit. Miss Emma Kent is convinced that the Duke is as guilty as sin, and is just as intent on proving it.

Alaric and Emma are an engaging couple and their romance is witty and charming. They have incredible chemistry and their interactions enhance both their physical and emotional bond. One particularly appealing element is the fact that both Alaric and Emma accept and respect one another despite their differences.

The mystery is rather straightforward and it is possible to guess the twists and turns of the plot. Neverthless, the actions scenes are exciting and the resolution is satisfying.

Al in all, a wonderful beginning to the series and I look forward to continuing. ( )

I guess I didn’t read the info on what the book was about. I just like reading about royals including dukes. So I read the book and was disappointed that it was almost all about sex and not about the story itself. I really like the idea of the story but if you took the sex out it would probably be less than 25 pages. I may be exaggerating a little but I’m not one for steamy romance. Great storyline with a lot of twists and turns with some wild characters. ( )

This was truly an in intriguing story, the mystery will keep you guessing right to the end. Emma "bless her" really wants to join her brothers and help them with their investigations. At one point, her misunderstanding of a situation made me laugh out loud. She was a trier though, she never gave up. Emma and Alaric become involved in a passionate relationship but Alaric's situation gets desperate and they became drawn together into a dangerous mystery.
This is a very steamy book for a historical, the story has mild erotic elements to it I was quite surprised. The plot line was good and the character development very well done. Emma couldn't be blamed for being a little niëve for her mistake, she was a virgin after all and Alaric was a good "egg" about it.
I'd highly recommend this book! ( )
