An age-appropriate way to talk about what the death of Martin Luther King, Jr meant to the country. This book gave an outlook to what it was like when MLK died and the things they had to do to get him to his resting place. They made sure he had the best looking cart with two mules that symbolized freedom for slaves. People followed and supported him and what he believed in. He made a lasting impact on so many and this book showed that in the illustrations and how many people gathered around for MLK. I loved this book. Martin Luther king was a pillar to the community during his time and I had no idea the background knowledge about him such as the cart that carried his body for his funeral. A simple wooden cart outside an antique store was borrowed and painted green to carry Martins coffin. The cart was pulled by two mules known as Belle and Ada. The cart was brought to the church where the first service was held them loaded with the coffin and brought to the next service for Martin. The cart was then returned as was the mules after the services were over. Many people put in offers to buy the cart but it was sold to the King family and was place in the National Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site. The book can be taught during black history month in schools. Martin Luther King is someone who is taught during that time and to know the significance of a simple cart that held him shows student how much of an impact he had on many people. ei arvosteluja | lisää arvostelu

HTML: The strength and spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. permeates this picture book about the funeral of Dr. King in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1968. Quiet, yet affecting, The Cart That Carried Martin is a unique tribute to the life of a man known world-wide for his outstanding efforts as a leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Eve Bunting focuses on the funeral procession of Dr. King, beginning with the two men who found the cart to carry him through the streets of Atlanta. After painting it green, two mules named Belle and Ada are hitched to the cart where Dr. King's coffin is placed. Tens of thousands of mourners gather as the cart makes its way to Ebenezer Baptist Church, and then past the Georgia state capitol to Morehouse College. All the while, crowds of people pay their respects by singing songs of hope. Bunting's thoughtful, well-chosen words, coupled with Don Tate's soft colors provide the reader with a sense of hope and reverence, rather than the grief and despair one might expect. Back matter includes a brief introduction to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s work, assassination, and funeral, accompanied by a full-color historical photograph of the real cart, drawn by Belle and Ada. .Kirjastojen kuvailuja ei löytynyt. |
