The term "marginalia" refers to writing and decorations outside the blocks of text and larger illustrations on the pages of books and manuscripts. In the Middle Ages, the margins of books were often embellished with images of various types. These include fantastic and exotic creatures, visual puns, and scenes from daily life.
This exhibition traces the historical stages and evolution in manuscript marginalia from the early Middle Ages through to the late Medieval world.
There is also an interactive on-line feature which allows you to explore the fantastic margins in two of the Getty's manuscripts.
