Tietoja minusta Avid reader. Cynical scientist. Poor Speller.

Tietoja kirjastostani My husband and I are both chemists - there is a heavy selection of "work" books our library - for kicks, I even review a few.

When I was a graduate student in Vancouver BC I started a collection of books on the bomb and cold war science - this is still growing.

I'm a sucker for Canadian literature - especially of the "it's a hard knock life" in the Maritimes variety. This comes from being stuck in NS for 18 years - they were not hard knock.

For more than a decade I have read aloud to my husband as he prepares our evening meal - these are denoted with the "Read Aloud" tag.

Rating scheme - 5 stars means a brillant and meaningful read and a great book. 4 stars can mean an excellent but meaningless book or meaningful book that was only good. 3 stars is worth reading. Less than three stars and I regretted the time spent.

Reviews - Are shortish and meant to convey my general feeling about the book. They are spoiler free and on purpose do not contain any critical plot details.

I noticed that you were a fan of Ryszard Kapuscinski, so I thought I'd let you know that a small Canadian press, Biblioasis, has just brought out a volume of his selected poetry. It's the only edition of Kapuscinski's poetry available in english. It's called I Wrote Stone, and was translated from the Polish by Diana Kuprel and Marek Kusiba.

His verse is interesting, and as one would expect, thoughtful, philosophical, aphoristic and engaged politically, morally and viscerally with the world around him. It's something all fans of Kapuscinski should read, a book that meant a lot to him, and that he worked very hard to see published before his death. It's a shame, alas, that he did not quite make it.

Anyway, it's available from Biblioasis. Online (www.biblioasis.com, www.amazon.com) and anywhere else you can find good books. Check it out.

(Sorry: I am an interested party: the publisher. But we're a small, literary press, and we're just doing our best to let anyone who might be interested know about this collection. Pardon my intrusion.)

After seeing your post about reading the Modern Library's Top 100 list, I clicked on your profile. I really enjoyed several of your reviews and gave them a thumbs up vote. You write the kind of reviews I like -- short, a little idea of the story without spoiling the plot, and an assessment of the quality. I look forward to reading more of them when I have time.
You asked about Ryszard Kapuscinski in translation. Sorry, can't really answer that question since the only book I read in English, Another Day of Life, I haven't read in Polish. But, it felt fairly similar in the atmosphere to his Polish versions, and that's always a good sign.
Do you read in German? I noticed that you have Atwood's The Blind Assassin logged as the German version.
By, the way, a comment about your comments. I feel the same way about books I liked a lot- it's very difficult to come up with a fairly coherent and short comment about them. The more I like the book, the more difficult it is to write about it.
Who makes the Mass Spec in your photo - its not ne I'm familar with! I've mostly worked with the Waters (ex-micromass) brands. What would you sayis an enjoyable Mass Spec book?
I just joined Librarything and read your review of the "Omnivore's Dilemma". I have it in my stack of books waiting to be read, and I will keep your very direct and constructive criticisms in mind as I do. I see we share 5 other books and was wondering what you thought of "The God Delusion"? I am having a hard time with Richard Dawkins' style of writing, so much so tht I keep putting the book down. I wonder if it is because with me he is preaching to the choir, or if his arguments lack the emotional grip that makes religious belief so impassioned. What did you think of the book?
hello - thanks for your review of An Equal Music... as a suitable-boy-fan I was also disappointed. same with Two Lives... shame huh?
best - lena
I had to give you a comment -- I just wrote in my thoughts about Unbearable Lightness of Being. How I loved it as a college student, but was not at all sure how my modern day cynical married self would view it now. After I submitted my review I looked below and read your almost identical comment! Funny! Coincidentally enough, I went to undergrad in your neighborhood at Tufts. jen
