Tietoja kirjastostani Discovering 'LibraryThing' is my current definition of serendipity. I started collecting books as a teenager (in the 50's) and have sometimes thought of creating a spreadsheet to try to encompass this living organism and lifelong companion. LibraryThing does that and much more. Even so, I was dreading the tedium and lost time of going shelf-by-shelf through my library. But it has been a good experience -- not only reacquaintance with old friends but surprisingly strong memories of when, where, and why individual books were bought. Rather than the expected guilt over the unread or partially-read, I was pleasantly surprised at the number and variety of books I've read (and sometimes re-read) through the years. I also realized that since most of my early reading was courtesy of various public libraries, there's a significant gap between what I own and what I've read. Perhaps a separate tag for books that made a difference, aren't in my personal library, but belong in some larger virtual library? And then there's the loaned-but-never-returned category. Most are long-forgotten but I noticed the absence of A Canticle for Leibowitz, Being There, and 84 Charing Cross Road along with missing Roths, Updikes, Bellows, Cheevers, Irvings, Whartons, not to mention the Robertson Davies. Again, maybe a tag (e.g., MIA) to restore the casualties of time and trust to one's virtual library?

Hi There,

I have an extra copy of 84 Charing Cross Road. Want it?

Perhaps there should be a standard tag for 'wishlist' and 'wishtogetridoflist'
and people can swap books? :)

I wish my books were as well organised as yours appear to be!

Well, I guess mine *are* but only on LibraryThing ;)

steve
Finding that my eclecticism is not so unique has been one of the iinteresting discoveries here. I'm also challenged to find books of mine that noone else has listed. Have you found many such?

Are you related to the Bancroft Library?
Thanks for the compliments on my library! I am flattered indeed to learn that someone has actually put it in the ones to watch... Sometimes I feel I am all over the place, with lots of books that have nothing to do with the majority of the books I own. But I like to read about things I know little or nothing about, that is the truth.
I recently joined several groups, and posted comments in a few of them. We shall see what that leads to, and if we shall go beyond the surface of (as you say) "what are you reading now"?
Keep reading and enjoy it, that is still my favourite pastime, in spite of TV, movies etc.!!!
Paola :-))
I really enjoyed reading what you say about your library.
I myself had been thinking of a way to catalogue all my books (which, by the way, I am still in the process of doing, here, on Lybrarything), until I stumbled into this wonderful website quite by chance. I can say that it is now my favourite pastime, having also joined some of the groups.
It is also very interesting to see other people's libraries, and the way they tag their books. Keep enjoying Librarything!!

That's a great idea about the tags for unread books - I've got plenty of half-read ones and making a note of their status may or may not increase my pleasure but at least I can get a feel for what lies ahead in my balmy days.
Thanks for the great quote and the kind note!
Glad you liked the review. One of the things I've found most interesting about this site is the connections between libraries. I've found collections that resemble mine but are also remarkably different. In a way the collections reflect a portion of the personality of the person cataloging. Not the whole personality, but certainly an interesting slice of it.

Have a good one.
Noticed we share a nice stack of books. Tags are a good way to seperate what you actually own from what you no longer have (or want to have, as some users have been doing). They also made me realize how many books I own that I haven't read, after I made a tag for that. Personally, I've only been adding books I actually own, but I'm trying to use this as a catalog of my physical library rather than a biblio-autobiography or a wishlist.

Happy cataloging.
