Tietoja minusta I'm a witch, knitter, singer of Eastern European folk music, and avid reader, obviously. Scifi, fantasy, contemporary fiction, classics and occasional non-fiction. My user name comes from my favorite 2 books in all the world.
Tietoja kirjastostani I love books with a dark side, and I'm a sucker for fairies. Patrick O'Brian was a god, "Cpt. Jack & Dr. Steve" books are among my favorites all time. Even tho I still read scifi, I adore beautifully written prose, hence my love for people like Peter Carey, T.C. Boyle, Martin Amis. I will re-read individual sentences that are striking, and love unusual word choices. Multi-dimensional characters make me drool, I want to root for your villian and get pissed at your hero.

Of course I'm not mad at you! It never occurred to me that you would really like Twilight. But still!!! EDWARD CULLEN!!! Doesn't your hubby smell your neck??? Or smolder at you???? Don't you guys sit in remote meadows and adore each other??? huh.
dude! we miss you. Blow off work from time to time and come chill with us! Have a great weekend, chica!
Love you!

Absolutely no worries! I'm not taking it personal, to heart, or anything like that! Everyone has different opinions of books. :)
Suge could never hate you! I gave her a link to the Twilight thread - maybe she'll actually post there. ;) (She's not been on LT much this week.) I'll pass your message on to her! :)
Yes, I expect you will have things waiting at your desk. Hopfully it's not an overwhelming amount but rather small. Hope I can catch you on LT!
Did you say you'll be in chat on Saturday for the OotP movie? I hate that I have to miss it, especially since I was late when you guys watched it that first week.
In case I'm not around this weekend, have a wonderful weekend!

Suge says she misses you, too! She wants you to know she's trying to get the first season of 'Battle for Galactica.' She can only find the second season right now. Also, she recently bought 'Firefly.'
Uglies was a really good book. You can read my review for it here.
I hope you have a good as well as safe trip. We'll miss you!

I saw on the Dragon that you're thinking of getting a MacBook Air. I'd love to hear about your experiences if you do. The wife and I are shopping for a new laptop soon and it's either that or the 15" MacBook Pro. Being the tech head of the family, I'm lobbying for the Air. She's lobbying for cheap. It is hard to catch up I imagine. We'll glady sum up recent events and you can start fresh on new threads instead of sorting out the other ones.
I think most of us are worried about G. From what little she's said, I'm think she may actually be better. I'm certainly hoping so. She's going through all sorts of difficult patches in life and I think some will resolve over the next week, others over the next few months.
I'll see you in the reread threads beginning with OotP. I really wish I'd been there for all of the books - I always feel terrible about that.
I sent your love to all on our weekend thread. Post #75 is a good one to read to find out about current events amongst our members.
Hope you're lying on a couch or in bed instead of still at the computer right now.
*hug for you*

The "Liberals Hate America" thing is simply a useful device - a "grenade" of sorts - that Doug likes to hurl when he can't find a rational point, or when he has exhausted every possible angle to get Marxism into the conversation. Note that he is not above using such tropes, while at the same time excoriating them in others. If you take a peek at his "manifesto", linked on his profile page, all will be revealed. For an avowed ex-Marxist, he loves to use all the old tricks.
He certainly has a way of taking all the air out of the room. For myself, I am finally taking the advice many others have offered me over the last few months. I am ignoring him.

Question about the Kushiel series, since you're clearly a reader of them... do you know how many books there are intended to be overall? I've had the first one on my TBR pile for a while, but I generally don't like to start a series until I already own all the books, so I don't end up having to wait to start the next book when I finish the previous. All that said, I just got my hands on the second book, and they're calling to me from that TBR shelf. Something about the series just looks so appealing...

I have half a mind to never watch PR again after that bull last week. of course, that's just me talking shit, how can you stay away, right?
how do you even begin to auf a kevin when you have a whinny ass, no talent having idiot like ricky in your show? How? Ricky has produced nothing but utter uglusity the whole season! show after show he does the same thing: whine about all the other designers, cry, roll his eyes, cry, ect. PATHETICO!! I'M SO DISGUSTED... I thought that the judges took past weeks into consideration when they voted. I cant believe ricky didn't get aufed. his dress was just sad and blah.
victoria... victoria.... I cant even remember what she did last week.
If I where Christian I would have punched that ugly little girl in her face, of course she would have kicked his ass after... how ugly was that dress? she looked like a mutant turd.

I just finished leaving a comment on Citygirl's profile page since I was there first. My comment related primarily to Tennis as I was reading your comments to her about various individuals in the sport. I have to say that I probably favor your players more than hers, though we're all in agreement on Serena. I respect Agassi for his skills, but nobody's held my interest much in the sport since Stefan Edberg retired; smoothest backhand and volleys, bar none! Of course, my wife liked to watch him for completely different reasons:) Becker was good too, but I always favored Edberg for his grace and I love the fact that in their three Wimbledon finals, Stefan beat Boris twice in his own "backyard."
I also hold great admiration for Patrick O'Brian's works. I re-read the first three Aubrey/Maturin books after seeing Master and Commander at the movies, and they were even better the second time around. I was going to recommend Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell to you, but I see you own it already. However, I don't see that you have Michael Chabon's latest, Gentlemen of the Road, and he's hard to beat for beautiful language.
Anyway, books or Tennis, I'm always open for comments or suggestions on either subject, if you're so inclined.
Take it easy,
bookstothesky

man did i scream on wed!!!!!
during commercial, i came on your profile and typed something like "SJP!!!!! NO F'ING WAY!!!!!! U ROCK!!!!!!!", because of your prediction that she would be the secret guest judge on PR (HOW did u do it??), but thankfully i remembered the time difference, and i didn't want to spoil the surprise, nor the moment when you jumped on your couch and yelled like a maniac: "I KNEW IT!!! DIDNT I SAY THAT?? DIDN'T I SAY IT WAS GONNA BE SARAH JESSICA PARKER???" (well maybe you don't yell like a crazed person, or jump on your couch. i do. shocking, i know)
omg, Elisa: *tsk tsk* spit marks??? ah i adore her.
I felt really bad when Marion got eliminated, but hell, his design was a whole new level of butt ugly i never want to encounter again. I was mostly disappointed with the majority of the designs this week. very blah. I loved Elisa and Sweet P's capelet and mono-whasit dress, and there were some really nice pieces from other designers.... Cant wait!! Cant wait!! Is it wednesday yet?
Well, take care! "see" ya!

ha ha ha I love, love love PR. Isn't Heiddi just gloriously beautiful? And goth, why don't these idiot contestants listen to Tim?? I mean, 99% of the time, if you don't listen to Tim's advice and critique in the work room, you get Auf'd, because he knows his shit! Oh, and I want to be Nina when I grow up!!
I'm glad that they didn't eliminate yoga girl, whom you know as Elisa (I'm really, really bad with names, so I make up my own for each cast member until I learn them. I had to open bravotv.com to write this!). Yep, she will have us rolling, cooky, quirky thing that she is. I knew it from the mo I saw her grass-staining her chiffon! chiffon!!!
Oh Chris's dress was exotic and gorgeous! and it was so well made and elegant! I did like emo guy's (Christian) suit tho. I am a sucker for pouffy skirts and that jacket was to die. when I first saw it I was like ewww but then... it kinda grew on me. the black trim if a bit iffy tho. You know, I kinda liked the pieces of Simone's design. together they were a train wreck, but separately, I would have liked the dress if it hadn't looked so homemade, and the little jacket (I have a thing for little jackets) would be perfect over this top I have.... oh well.
Hey I cant wait for biker chick sweet p to tear into some one's ass already! I can tell!! She had man arms! ha ha ha
Kevin was quick to put it out there that he is not gay! he he! you go boy! mmmm Rami is yUmmmmmY---and he has taste!

And about Roddick, don't be too hard on him. The match he played against Roger at the U.S. Open, I don't know if you saw it, but it was the best I'd ever seen him. If he had been playing anyone else he would have won the tournament. He made Roger play at his best, too. A classic match. A quarterfinal maybe? Jimmy Connors has really made a difference to his game. And I love his press conferences. He's hilarious. I agree that Blake is a huge disappointment. He chokes. I've given up on him. I don't know when we'll next see a big American player. But I've got my fingers crossed.
I love, love, love the Williams sisters. I don't let anybody talk bad about my girls! After what Serena did at this year's Australian, I think she totally redeemed herself. It was amazing. Match by match she just got better, summoning up some warrior spirits, you could see it in her roar...and then in the final she totally dismantled Sharapova in the one of the most brutal thrashings I've ever seen, Maria has not been the same ever since. I kinda feel sorry for her. She's a tiger too. Or was.
Justine, Justine. Well, I don't hate her anymore but I can't bring myself to like her either, altho she plays very prettily. Mauresmo is one of my favorite players and it was so gratifying to see her work through her demons last year to become number one and take slams, but Justine's behavior in the 2006 Aussie final left a really bad taste in my mouth. Other women worth watching? Hmmm...well, Mauresmo should be healthy again at the beginning of the year and she is just gorgeous to watch. Keep your eye on Jankovic and Ivanovic, two Serbs (I don't know what it is with that country) and I think Vaidisova (Czech) will develop into a kind of Sharapova, but with a more versatile game. She still has some growing to do. And those Russians just keep coming.... Davenport is coming back. We'll see. I don't see any real threats from American up-and-comers on the women's side, either.
As you can tell, I'm kinda a tennis fanatic. *smiles in embarrassment* So, thanks for talking tennis with me. You have no idea how happy it makes me.

Have you been in the HP Review Contest thread lately? There's a lovely reception taking place and you need to go to the stage! ;) Of course, we're singing now but that can go on hold. :)
Lähettänyt: Kerian 3:56 pm (EST) Aug 17, 2007
I haven't heard of the scifi thing, either. Sometimes I have to really consider whether a book is real or made up in the series. (Ex. "Shadow the Sheep Dog". :)
It's been five years since I read any of the books mentioned that are by Shakespeare, but I'm taking a Shakespeare class next spring. As for "Wuthering Heights," I still haven't read it yet. I keep meaning to read that one!
It's my opinion that Jasper Fforde not only is very knowledgable about books, (how many books does that guy read a year, a month, a week? ;) but that he favors particular authors such as Austen and Shakespeare. I agree, there are far more authors out there (though note I am in the I Love Jane Austen group :)! It's extremely possible that, because I haven't read Trollope, Eliot, Thackeray or Fielding, that I missed them.
If I read something by Trollope, which book do you most recommend? (Sorry in advance if I've asked previously. :) I remember you told me about the Trollope group.
Lähettänyt: Kerian 3:55 pm (EST) Aug 13, 2007
Yes, that's the thing about his books: you can read some books he makes references to that you've never read, and when you come back to Fforde's books, the things click that you missed before. :)
There are quiet a few books that appear. I've tried keeping lists, but don't have them all down. I've italicized the books that play a larger role:
#2 "Lost in a Good Book"
-> Dickens: "Great Expectations"
-> Shakespeare: "Much Ado About Nothing," "Hamlet," "MacBeth," "Henry IV," and "Merry Wives of Windsor"
-> Beatric Potter: "Tale of Flopsy Bunnies"
-> Edgar Allan Poe: "The Raven"
#3 "The Well of Lost Plots"
-> Lewis Carrol: "Alice in Wonderland"
-> Emily Bronte: "Wuthering Heights"
-> Jane Austen: "Sense and Sensibility"
-> "Bradshaw Hunts Big Game," Bradshaw Defies the Kaiser," "Bradshaw of the Congo" (any book from the Comander Bradshaw series)
-> Ernid Blyton: "Shadow the Sheep Dog"
-> Dickens: "A Christmas Carol," "David Copperfield"
-> Daphne Farquitt: "The Squire of High Potternews"
-> T.H. White: "The Sword in the Stone"
-> "Count Dracula"
-> "Sword of the Zenobians"
-> Zharkian Empire series (s.f.)
#4 "Something Rotten"
-> Shakespeare: "Hamlet"
-> Zhark series (s.f.)
-> "Death at Double-X Ranch"
#5 "First Among Sequels"
-> Jane Austen: "Pride and Prejudice"
-> Rowling: Harry Potter
The fifth book takes place in 2002, whereas the others are back-to-back, and take place in the 80's, I believe. While I would definitely not consider all the books he makes references to as classics, there are an awful lot that are. The author has a better list of book references on his website. Also, some members of the Fforde Ffan group have listed books references on the threads.

I read a few chapters of "Barchester Towers" at B&N tonight, and while it’s not enough to get a feel for Trollope's storytelling, I can at least say that I like his writing style. Also, after reading about him in the introduction (B&N Classics edition) he certainly sounds interesting. I’ll have to knock a few other titles off my TBR pile before I can add any Trollope though--it’s just too tall as it is! Take care, :-)

I was so afriad of not having a computer all summer long that I pre-ordered a regular edition at B&N, to donate it to the children's hospital where my mom works once I read it. (I still very much want a deluxe edition, and I'm sure the kids would love the book.) Now that all these days have passed and I've gotten a chance to slip online for a bit, I see you found someone with some deluxe editions. Well, hopefully they still have some, anyway. :) I'll have to call them. Thanks so much for looking for me! :)
Hmm, food... I was always the picky eater. :) I'd like to think I'm not nearly as much as I used to be. When it comes to salad, I prefer spinache. I don't eat that much meat, but specifically, fish scares me, and I don't eat meat from cows. (Remember all that mad cow business? It kind of made me stop eating hamburgers. :) I'm always a sucker for grilled cheese sandwiches. Hopefully, I'll catch some HE group LTers this weekend while I have acess to a computer other than my own broken one. If not, I hope to be on a computer at a library next week to use the internet.

That's great that you do marathons too! We almost did San Diego this year, but went for ND instead. So why do you run them?
You know, I've thought about starting a running group on LT because I haven't seen one and it'd be fun to have the community to encourage each other. Last I checked there weren't any LT running groups.

I'm going to have a SPEDOINKLE weekend, thank you very much -- we're hitting the bookstores again tomorrow.

As for me, "our fore-fathers warned us not to take anything that would make us weak or silly", so I don't. Never did; never will. I can't even drink.
The newest Firesign Theater album I listened to was "Don't Crush the Dwarf; Pass the Pliers". I think the last time I actually listened to it was almost 20 yers ago.
Looks like you joined LT right around the same time I did.
Regards,

I'll have to study a few different centuries of British and American lit once I transfer to a four-year college. I haven't read anything by Trollope yet. Have you? Perhaps you can recommend some books to me.

Now, now, I didn't say that! I'm basically an emotional wimp and unless there is reasonable and calm discussion I bow out of debates pretty quickly, if I get involved at all.
Fundamentalists come in all stripes and I've found there really is no discussion with them. I'm constantly seeking and always questioning. I know I don't have all the answers whereas they feel they have the only valid answers, whether atheist or Evangelical Christian (or Pagan for that matter.)
My stepfather is doing fine. The biospy is on Friday. Thanks for asking!

Like you, I saw "Happy Heathens" and thought, "Great!" Little did I realize it was being wrongly used as a term for atheists. You'd think a well-read group like this would know the difference! Ah well.

I totally agree with you about Vonnegut....those are my two favourites, in that order. And "Little, Big" has just ruined fantasy-type novels for me.....if I want something LIKE that I just go to Crowley. (Tried to read other stuff by him, and you guessed it, I couldn't get through it) Somehow I can't get past Smokey Barnable and Daily Alice. YOU gave me that book and I'll always be grateful.

I was surprised to see your list doesn't include "The Last Unicorn". Both the girls have been into this lately, and it makes me think of you.
Since I have been busy becoming a teacher I haven't had much time for pleasure reading. I guess I COULD include all the "How to be a teacher" books, and my math volumes, but how boring would that be! The last book I read for fun was "The Devil in The White City", which I completely enjoyed. Grim, but fascinating.
OK, well, I'm going to scope out your reviews for something else to read.
