Hei! I turn to you for more questions. Why is it not open for event that take place for a year at a time - as for example in Norway our goverenment has decided at our county celebrates "Kulturminneåret 2009 (Culture Memory Year 2009). Culture includes also books as many other things. I Haugesund we celebrate every august Den norske Filmfestival, which H.K.H Kronprince Håkon opens and is protect of. Liv Ullman (the actress) is honorary president of. Over the years many Haugesund has housed many guest from Hollywood in connection with the Filmfestival.
In area Haugesund, Tysvær and Karmøy lives aprox. 100.000 +/- inhabitants who loooovvveeesss to read and see films.
Early in august Haugesund is hosing famous jazz musicians including musicians from New Orleans or any where else in the USA. Both Filmfestival and Sildajazz are arranged by Haugesunc local council.
With other words I wish I could pose an event for a year (jan-des.).

I notice you're quarantining all of the pictures I've posted from Random House. You might be right about whether they are intended for booksellers. If so, though: (1) Does that mean LT can't use the images? Random House says: "These files are provided for you to use in promoting titles to your customers." It would seem that LT use is entirely consistent with that intention. (2) Someone will have to go out and pull a bunch of pictures already on LT (many dozens, if not more, have been there for a long time) that have precisely the same attribution.

I am a bit surprised that you think that I destroy all the good systems here at Library Thing. I do my very best, and if I am doing something wrong, it is not on purpose. The most important thing - anyhow - is happening on book-level. It is important not to combine different books. Many of the members here at Library Thing do combine different books even with the same author - , but I don´t know who they are.

You're very welcome. I'm always glad to recommend something, even if I have to send a customer to another store or the library. The only other late New Orleans book I can recommend highly is The World That Made New Orleans by Ned Sublette. Mr. Sublette has already made a name for himself with his writing on Cuba and the Carribean. I was intrigued by his focus here on the often overlooked fact that most of New Orleans African population came from North Africa, rather than the west coast where many slaves were brought to the rest of North America. Muslim educated North African slaves and artisans may have made the difference in New Orleans' cultural mix, paricularly in the simularity of early jazz and klezmer.
Heh. Have you BEEN to New Orleans? I was never able to bring myself to suck out a crawfish head, personally....

I thank you for your rational review of House on First Street. I checked it out from work last week. As a former New Orleanian, I was quite disgusted by it, despite some good writing. I've been steering customers towards Gumbo Tales instead, which is another post-Katrina book by a ex-NOian, that I've just started. It points out the ridiculousness of the restaurant culture down there, pre- and post-Katrina without being insulting.
The thing that really bothers me, is that a New York Times reviewer recommended it, while having the same qualms that you do in your review.
Sorry to ramble. It just feels good not to be the lone dissenting voice...

Yes, am enjoying the Norwich tremendously, as his writing is, as you know, quite engaging. But I need to keep flipping to the family trees to "keep score" as there's an enormous cast of characters and the names are usually quite similar. Not as bad as Russian novels, though ;-) Byzantium isn't exactly my era - my undergrad degree was in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology, and I concentrated on ancient Egypt.

Twoey the Bad Cat has gotten by on his cuteness for lo these eight years. The vet gushes over him and laments that he can't be bred (his fur is particularly bright red-gold, although you can't tell it from this photo). Then there are the vet techs who argue about whose turn it is to deal with him.

Thanks, I'll do that: but since the image is unequivocally PD, is any credit at all really necessary? For instance, I've never credited the National Archives and Records Administration on any of the public domain USHMM photos I've uploaded.

Dear Lilithcat,
I am new to LT just joined yesterday and paid dues. I read your posts on the Etiquette forum talk and you made some posts along with others in Feb about combining and problems with amazon etc. You also made some very insightful comments about language and how to approach communicating with people online which I really appreciated being a language teacher ( French). You seemed pretty understanding and interested in the topic so I was hoping maybe you could explain to me what that was all about? I ask because I have a lot of French books and some books in English with no ISBNS and when I started adding books last night sometimes when I typed in the ISBN I could find the book in both Amazon and Library of Congress- I always check LC first but then sometimes could only find it via aazon or amazon.fr - I also noticed what seemed to be errors or confusion either on my part about what cataloguers had entered for some books on every single one of those sites. For example even on LC for one of my French art books the author listed was actually the editor and in French you have publishing and printing series and editor's series that all follow different names and there is no field provided for that in English since it doesn't seem to really correspond. How the books are really known by what seris or grouping is done a little differently over there as well for art books so it doesn't quite translate. It has been done inconsistently across LC amazon and amazon.fr and some university sites. I am not quite sure how to correct it in the data I imported via LT when adding the book? and what is considered bad data that we new users should be aware of to that it doesn't cause problems for others? Thanks for the note about Creative Commons- the pictures are staff photos (mine) of my library- so how do I get them to "stick"? And the logo is the school logo to identify the venue- so who has to give permission for that?

Hi lilithcat! Noticed you've been adding some Chicago bookstores to Local, and I've heard you mention the Seminary Co-op before, so wanted some advice. I'm FINALLY moving to Chicago, at the end of this week (it only took a year for everything to finally work itself out...), and I am positively in love with the Seminary Co-op (and 57th Street Books), but I'm going to be living on the north side. Would you recommend any of the places you've added in/near Edgewater? I'm sure I'll still do plenty of traveling to Hyde Park, but I'd be happier if I knew there were good bookstores close to me too. Well, I have been told by a few people to read the first book in the trilogy, so I am definitely going to do that. And then if I don't like it, to be honest, I'll still probably even give the second and third books a try - for some reason, if the first book doesn't sit right with me, the second and third books actually DO. Strange, 'eh?

I always did love a good set of fantasy books, and quite frankly, the reason I picked up the boxed set in the store was for the fact the set was entitled "His Dark Materials," so I figured it was about something dark and mysterious, so I'm guessing I will end up liking them a lot. :)

Hi Joan -- thanks for the feedback on the bookcases! Sounds encouraging. We're definitely going to have room to grow; our new place is a South Loop loft in an old building, and we've got a reaaaaally big wall to fill with cases. Hi! I just saw in a Talk discussion that you had 57th Street Bookcases build your built-ins. I'm just starting to work with them to design some for my new place. Everything I hear has been positive, so I'm not looking for an endorsement as much as any thoughts you might have about what you'd do differently if you knew then what you know now!

(And, actually, I do have one specific question. Are your shelves around 35" wide? Are they fixed or adjustable? And have you had any problems at all with the shelves sagging when fully loaded?)

A quick question regarding those pics you posted under currently reading. I followed the advice you had given to another thingamabrarian and it works great however, when amazon has no pic of the book on file, I've tried using other sites pics (or even LT's user pics) and always come up with a broken picture box when I save my profile using the non-amazon address.

Any suggestions/ideas? I appreciate your help! Thanks.

Hello, I read your review of the AIA guide to Chicago. Have you seen the Ira Bach guide to Chicago's Historic Suburbs? It's out of print, but it does have a good chapter on River Forest. I have to say I enjoyed walking around River Forest more than Oak Park.

I read some of your posts under 'Recommended Site Improvements' and thought you might be able to help. How do you input pre-ISBN books, especially *very* old books which only have the publisher address, no date or other info. For example, the first book I've tried to catalogue with this issue is Andersen's Fairy Tales, but all I know is that it was printed in Great Britain by Blackie and Son. I'm afraid to think how many books I have that also lack info.

Thanks for the link help. Getting it aligned well is a hassle, the pic didn't come through from Amazon properly (probably some kind of protection by them), but I fixed it.

I'm done with the individual Books of Magic books. 'Never' away if you think it is wise. I don't feel that I have enough experience yet to touch the Never button.

We're Livejournal neighbors at that. No more booksales for me until I find a new job, alas. And the Ravenswood Manor massive garage sale is this weekend. sigh.

Ha! We appear to be cleaning up the Neil Gaiman/Books of Magic mess at the same time. I've temporary combined a few odd things such as Neil Gaiman/John Bolton Neil Gaiman in order to combine the works and then separate the authors after doing that. Perhaps I'm going at it in the round-about way since you seem to be 'nevering' the author combinations at the same rate that I'm re-separating them. I couldn't think of another way that don't have ISBN's...Sorry if I made a mess for a few minutes...

I saw that suggestion, and I wish I did know. I suppose Boris could have collaborated with another brother, or a son - after Arkady's death? - and googling the French titles didn't tell me much... so I left it, for someone with more knowledge, or more guts.

I guess we could post the question to Combiners, or to an SF group. Hmm.

RE - pictures. No I'm not Tristane - I cut a longer story shorter

I discovered that Janny Wurts had no picture, I went to her website, and left a request.

By the time I got back, the next day, permission had been granted and another forum member had registered on LT and uploaded the photo - crediting copyright as requested - but unaware of the issues involved in permissions... I'll see if I can upload a second copy with a link to the permission.

As I've seen you've flagged an Author photo - Janny wurts is with persmission of the author. I've commented the quote below on Abby's page too.

Hi, I noticed that you added the author disambiguation notice for A. Wainwright. I'd like to edit it, and thought it would be polite to run my suggestion past you first. Alfred Wainwright is almost always identified on his books as A. Wainwright, so when anyone adds one of his books it will pretty much always be with his name as A. Wainwright. What I'd like to propose as the disambiguation notice is:

"This author is Alfred Wainwright, almost always identified as A. Wainwright, the British author of walking guidebooks and sketchbooks of Great Britain. If the author of your book is not this person, please re-enter the full name in the author box instead of the surname and first initial only. Then your book will show up on the correct author page. Thank you for your help."

How does that sound?

Did Guillem let you read his translation or my translation of his play? My English translation is due out in print this summer. You'll have to add it to your library. And Skin in Flames opens in Chicago in February of 2008 (this month in Philadelphia, and Salt Lake City in January).
