Tietoja minusta I'm retired from a myriad of jobs and now enjoy my reading, among other things. We recently welcomed the little guy in the picture above. Thanks to the excellent suggestions of my friends in the Green Dragon he is named Gleneflyk's Fool of a Took, better known as Pippin. We also have a sweet old dear named Daisy. Both dogs are mini schnauzers.

Books have always been a passion, always my best friends. We are a military family and have moved many times across Canada and each time the movers complain about all the books, it's definitely a (loving) family joke. I always feel like we're finally home when all my books are unpacked and sorted out.

I keep books because I love them and want to reread them again, because they offer fond memories of who gave them to me or who owned them before me, for reference, or to up my count on LibraryThing ;-)

Books I'm reading now:

I'm listening to The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue and Don't Know Much About History.

Tietoja kirjastostani My collection is pretty eclectic, mostly fiction, my preference, but non-fiction too, biographies, references, art, history, crafts. All the books catalogued are physically in my library, most I've read, some are still waiting patiently. It's a living thing, always growing, sharing and comparing with friends and family.

Oh, I was hoping you'd like it!
:o)
I thought my Library Group would be reading and discussing it, but I guess it's still too hard to get 20 copies through our Inter-Library Loan System. It's still too much in demand. Looks like we'll have to wait a couple of years.
Agreed.
Regarding "judgemental" - that's because I'm quite good at editing myself before hitting the submit button... sometimes whole paragraphs have to go ;-)
Oh, you just added The Stolen Child! I think you'll like it! :o)

This new Homepage thing is neat! I get to see what all my buddies are bringing home.
Ohh, that sounds delicious. That link was really interesting as well as very tempting. I haven't come across maple candy here in the UK although we do have maple syrup for pancakes and ice-cream (but it isn't as popular as it ought to be.

I'm glad that I was right about the fudge type maple candy. I will have to look out for it. There is an online sweet shop I might need to go and visit now.

I am glad Pippin was pleased to see Mark home. I bet he was so excited. Glad to know you are all okay.
Just dropping by to say hello again and see how you all are. I think you must have your husband home by now, haven't you? I did the reunion with Pippin go?

I have a question and since you are in Canada you are the best person to ask I think. What is Maple Candy? I read about it a lot and imagine it to be something like fudge or sugar cubes, or a cross between both. Sort of like cough candy and shaped like maple leaves if you buy it in gift pack form or in cubes if it's just for you to eat. But Andrew says he thinks it will be more like a boiled sweet, sort of like a humbug. We need you to settle the discussion.
Thanks for your concern, dear. Mary Leigh and her family are on the opposite end of Iowa from the floods. They are on the side that gets tornadoes!

The night of that terrible twister that hit the Boy Scout Camp was the night I got a phone call from my granddaughter. They were in the basement and the sirens were going off, but the storm missed them on its way to the camp. (Hannah is 4, and being in the basement scared her. Christian is 2, and he thought it was a great adventure! A guy-thing, evidently)

Thanks for asking. Mary Lou
Have you read Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton? I think you would like it. He's not so much trying to convince the reader, as telling why he was convinced, if you see the difference. But he would have a thing or two to say on the subject of Jesus laughing. I'm in no doubt of God's humor when I look at some of the animals, plants and people he has made. ;)
Hi, was it you who wanted to talk about The Name of the Rose when I finished? My memory is on vacation. If it wasn't, then delete this and give me a slap, O.K.? I liked it, especially the mystery part, but I did start skimming all the various rants towards the end. It sort of felt like the author wasn't sure he would ever write another book and wanted to get all the research he had ever done into this one. And is it just me, or did the sex incident in the kitchen seem thrown in for titillation? Still, I enjoyed it, and some of the talks between William and Adso really made me think, which I like.
True, I have! But this time of year is always insanely busy for me.
*hugs*
Clare
You okay, Katherine? You've been quiet lately...
Or is it just my imagination?
*hugs*
Clare
Hee, hee. I KNEW you'd love it!! Hugs to Pippen. Save one for yourself.
Wonderful news! Thank you for sharing, it's good to know when things go well after prayers. :)
Hi katylit!

I wanted to let you know that my plans have changed. I will be staying in Seattle instead of traveling up to B.C. I have a friend there that is going to have more free time than he first thought, so I wanted to take advantage of that. I am keeping all your wonderful suggestions for my next trip that direction. I plan on coming back that way and finally getting into Canada.

I'm still so excited about our upcoming gathering. Hope you are well, I've been away from the Dragon for so long, I have no idea what's going on with anyone.
I forgot, at first Scottie was more pleased to see me home after three days than Andrew after all those months. She ignored him for a while and then all of a sudden decided to forgive him and went to sit on his knee. Now she is following him everywhere and he can't go out the front door without her barking at him. She's been very funny to watch, she rounds him up and makes him sit down again.
I'm so pleased that she got the job, she must be over the moon. And in a nicer place with nicer people too. That's such good news.

And well done to Pippin too, graduating puppy school. I think Scottie might have to go back for some training. She has gotten a little bit too far over to the naughty side just lately and I think it will do us both good to be trained in behaviour again. She's developed a bit of a taste for chasing people on bikes (a boy fell off! I was so ashamed) and running away and refusing to come back when called. We need a refresher course in better behaviour.

It is lovely to have Andrew home again, meeting his ship was lovely but he was on duty and had to stay with it for a few hours after it got in. I was allowed to stand at the top of the gangway with him and was allowed to give him a hug but he was not allowed to put down his machine gun, which was between us, so I was a bit worried we might accidentally shoot each other while we were hugging. He said it wouldn't happen but it still had me worried, I've never had a hug involving a machine gun before.

We drove home the next day and I asked him to take a detour to Oxford on the way to look for secondhand books. It was worth it because I have never been to Oxford before and we wandered around all those beautiful old buildings saying "It's like Hogwarts," "It's like Istanbul," "It's like going back in time" Every street is different and beautiful. And I found a LOT of books :-)
Hi Katherine, just saying hi and hoping that things went well yesterday for your daughter. I'm sure she knows how much you are thinking of her even if you can't be there with her. I hope that she has good news from one of the interviews.
Take care, Jody x
Hi Katherine, just quickly dropped into LT and saw your post on the Crankypants thread. I hope that things pick up for your daughter soon. It sounds like she has been having a rough time anyway without the bad news about her job. Sending hugs to you both.

I'm sorry I didn't see your post before, I've been away for a few days meeting Andrew's ship in Portsmouth - he's home!

But even though I might not be about for a few days I will be thinking of you both and I hope that your daughter has some good news quickly.
you have some very interesting books that is pretty cool to read later on and i think i will start with the snake the crocidile and the dog
Months ago I had posted something about using Mascarpone cheese in a rhubarb coffee cake recipe. You had responded asking to know how it turned out/how it was made. I did finally post the recipe so I wanted to make sure you got it. Sorry it took months! I hope you get a chance to try it, it was lovely. Let me know if you can't find it in the Dragon.
Hi Katherine

Thank you for asking about Scottie, she seems to be a bit brighter today. I took the vets advice and made sure she had a small amount of water often rather than a lot all at once. She had nothing to eat yesterday so this morning I scrambled her an egg. She ate that and at teatime she had a small amount of grilled chicken. She hasn't 'been' since yesterday for me to check but the vet said to expect that as she was empty and not getting anything to fill her up. He said that she will probably go tomorrow and I will have to watch to see if and where she does it so I can check it. If it is still worrying then she has to go back.

Don't I tell you all some lovely things.

Andrew is due back in less than a week now! And I've gone shy. I'm really nervous about seeing him again, which doesn't make any sense but is sort of nice in a way. It's like meeting for the first time all over again.

I read about Pippin and the lawnmower, sensible of him to bark from a safe distance. Once the lawn was short did he go out to play in the clippings? That's Scottie's favourite part, she comes back looking like the worlds first green scottie dog.

Take care and thank you again for asking about Scottie, Jody x
Talking about socializing our dogs - I really forgot to introduce Greta to lots of children, short people, before she got too old. She ended up being a little afraid of children and would bark at them, then they were afraid of her. A bit of a vicious (well, not really vicious) circle. She is a little better now but children still hate the barking that the schnauzers do. And she likes to jump up on people which is especially hard on children. I wish I had paid a great deal more effort at teaching her "off" meaning, don't jump up on that person! I love training too. They are very smart and will certainly try to out smart us and to train us. Greta has done that very well. Nicky is still just a sweetie.

Nice to hear from you.
Hey Katherine, how are you doing? It seems as though I am not on LT as much as I used to be partially because I have gotten busy with other stuff. I thought I'd drop you a line and let you know I put a new pic of Greta on my profile page. You might enjoy it. Hope all is good at your house and that Pippin has learned to not practice his little bites on your hands. They are, after all, the hands that feed him....

LOL - Karen
I'm glad that the headaches are easing again and that Pippin is nearly through his bitey stage. Those puppy's on the LTers with dogs thread made me think of Scottie in hers and then I found the schnauzers and thought of Pippin too. Imagine how much more 'fun' six of them being bitey together would be!

I am on countdown now for HMS Illustrious to come home. But I will be seeing Andrew before it arrives because he is going to be on TV next Monday in a documentary about the ship. It's called Warship and is on our channel five so I have been ringing the whole family up and down the country to tell them to watch. It sounds silly but I keep wondering if he will look the same on TV. I'm really excited about it.

I think Pippin will remember Mark when he gets home. He will probably come bounding up all excited and keen to show off his new tricks from Puppy Classes.
You're reading the House of Lost Souls. I finished that a few weeks ago. What do you think, are you enjoying it? I thought it had some very creepy moments in it.

Hope the headaches are better again now and that Pippin's biting stage is over. Scottie's was hard work. If it moved she had to bite it. Is Pippen enjoying being the man of the house?

I just realised that today is my one year Library Thing anniversary. It's 1:31am here now so it's still not my LT anniversary by LT time but it is where I am. I can't believe it has been a year, it's passed by so quickly. But at the same time, I have 'met' so many lovely people (and thier dogs) on here that I feel like I have known you all for much longer than a year.
Yes, I know both Kim & Brenda and their business. To have someone still in your life from kindergarten is quite the statement. That's wonderful.

I like the all photos in the book, some of them I love. And I really appreciate how he has so many different types, from action to stills to portraits to landscapes and so on, managing to really give the reader an excellent feel for the area, which is really what his job was. I have yet to read it cover to cover, though I'm sure I will one of these days.

Take care,
Joanne
Hi Katherine, thanks for stopping by. Who is your friend in Ganges? Maybe I know her/him?

How did you like that Comox Valley book, by the way?

Joanne
Oh, my, until the middle of June! That is a long time.

Are you still doing the once a day tummy rub. That also is to teach who is the boss. The idea is not so much the tummy rub but putting the pup on his back in your control, and rubbing his tummy until he gives up any struggling, and relaxes in your hands.

But I agree the boss thing is key. I had the 3 labs and 2 schnauzers all sit and stay before I opened the door to the garage where feeding starts. It really helped.

Baby's crying, got to go. More later. Be happy.
Hi Katherine, sorry to hear you have been suffering with a migrane, Andrew gets them sometimes and I know from him just how awful they make you feel.

I can't imagine how much worse they feel while you are trying to train a very active puppy at the same time. Pippin should grow out of the bitey stage soon. I remember Scottie going through hers and it was difficult. Every time anything moved she would bite it. I even checked on the internet to see if it was normal and a very kind man with a scottie puppy told me that he also has a ginger cat and his scottie spent three months with a beard of ginger fur, he snapped at the cat so often. It still cheers me up now to think of that poor cat. He said it had started to spend all its time finding a way around the house without steping on the floor.

I'm glad you found Stourhead Gardens and the picture from A Rambling Fancy. I am almost certain that it has to be the same place. And I know what you mean about the travel budget too. I think we will be holidaying at home this year, but then, Andrew will probably enjoy that since he has been away so long.

Thank you for thinking of me, I'll be hoping you feel better soon too. Love and hugs back, Jody x
For some reason I missed seeing your message and just found it now. I think I have found the place on the cover of A Rambling Fancy. I was sure it looked very familiar and I used to live in Somerset so have been to a number of Jane Austin places (Bath and Lyme Regis being the two favourites). So I was trying to think of where I might have been and seen that domed building and remembered Stourhead Gardens. It's a national trust place in Wiltshire so I googled it and took the photo tour of the garden. The first photo is a very familiar looking domed building on a lake and I am certain it is the same one.

Bath is very lovely too but you will need a lot of money to spend if you decide to visit. Everything is very expensive, costs a lot to get in or has a tempting gift shop attached. But if you want to stay further up the country we are in Yorkshire (unless we move with the navy to Portsmouth) and you are welcome to the spare room, wherever that room might be.

Take care, Jody x
