Good morning jennyo;
I am doing the 999 challenge (this is my first year for any of the challenges) but I chose John Steinbeck as one of my nine categories as he is my favorite author. Anyway I pulled him up in an LT search field and was scrolling through his books to see which nine books I wanted to read for the challenge and I came across a review of yours that you wrote in September of 2008 or 2007 (can't remember). The review was on Steinbeck's "Sweet Thursday". I have been reading him since I was in Jr. High and am 61 now-----so for a very long time, but I've never researched him and I had never seen this particular book. I would just grab any Steinbeck off the library shelf and go home and read it. I have always loved his writing. But until I read your review, I did not even know there was a sequel to "Cannery Row"!~!
I felt like I had come across a goldmine. "Cannery Row" and "Tortilla Flat" (both of them absolutely crack me up every time I read them plus his writing is just amazing) are probably my two favorites of his except for "The Winter of Our Discontent". That's my fav. Anyway now I can't wait to get onto Amazon this A.M. and order "Sweet Thursday".
It must seem strange to get a "Thank you" for a review you did 1 or 2 years ago, but THANK YOU!~!~!

I am just reading your review of Flaubert's Parrot as I am looking for a recovery read from The Five Books of Moses Lapinsky...I too love to take quotes from books that speak to me. I almost crossed the book off my list because I know nothing about Flaubert and it has been at least 15 years since I was forced to read Madame Bovary. But you have changed my mind.

A writer writing about a writer...thank you for talking me into it.

I just finished reading the Dictionary of Maqiao and also found it excellent. Just wanted to say that I enjoyed your review and am so glad that other people are also enjoying this truly great book.

You went to the Texas Book Festival this weekend, and I went to the Jewish Book Festival. Well, at least long enough to hear the keynote and get the new book signed. It was Michael Chabon, of course. (Hubba, hubba!) I didn't read Gentlemen of the Road in the NYT, so I'm quite looking forward to reading it on my flights home for Thanksgiving next week!

You posted re: "The Loved One", by Evelyn Waugh on March 28, 06 "There's a movie based on this book, but it's not available on DVD yet", well there is now and NetFlix has it. So does my library and as soon as I'm finished reading it, I'm going to check out the film. Thought you'd want to know just in case you didn't already.

I also loved From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg. I tried to read it to my 10 year old. No go. Not enough action! Can you believe it? Read it to 'em when they're quite young and more patient.

I can't believe I finally found someone else who has read Elizabeth Peter's books! I really am hooked on them. I haven't read them all yet, but I own almost all of them. I'm reading "The Snake, the Crocodile & the Dog" right now. Perhaps, you would like Lyn Hamilton's books too. They are archaeological mysterys.

There really WAS a William Gould, but probably (!) he did not undergo these adventures. I can't remembere how I found a picture of him, and bio, several years ago. I share your appreciation of this book. (The Sound of One Hand Clapping, with its beauty and sadness, is not to be missed.) Esta1923
