Tietoja minusta There are too many writers and books I love to list them all, and to name them in a way that is fair to each. The clutter I built up on this page in an effort towards a comprehensive list looked absurd.

The notion of 'favourites', of lists of works, is many things to many people. A useful indication of broad tastes and an opportunity for discoveries, or a vague and childish category, or - very often - a crude arena in which people pit themselves against each other: the masses versus the connoisseurs, fans versus their rivals, pedants against each other and so on. In the contests the actual contents of a book, or the specific effects it has on an individual at a particular time, lose all relevance.

But even if one assumes that all those who fall in love with a book are seduced in the same way, by the same things, it becomes hard to decide what is more depressing: that hundreds of people seem to love a painful but unforgettable piece of writing, as if it were last year's most popular television talk show, or that almost none have heard of other, equally marvelous works.

Tietoja kirjastostani This library is not complete, but representative - it's essentially the collection I have built up by foraging at bookstores and sales over the past eight to nine years. About 10% of the titles here are in other countries, and I have left out numerous titles from my childhood and adolescence (children's books, comics, sci-fi, adaptations, adventure/ thriller novels, mysteries, encyclopediae, textbooks, etc.) and periodicals. I have also largely left out titles that belong to my parents, even though I have access to some of them.

Besides, I was more of an obsessed reader and frequent borrower before, not as given to hoarding, while I am a negligent reader but obsessed collector now.

I have recently begun including some of my girlfriend's books - they are tagged "For L."

I haven't yet found a comprehensive online cataloguing system for my DVDs and CDs, but I have tried a few.

Most of my DVDs are catalogued at DVDSpot and here on LT. I will be sticking to DVDSpot until/unless LT develops a comparable system.

Some of my CDs are catalogued at here on LT. I am looking for a better system.

A very small number of my wants are catalogued here.

Just a note to say how much I agree with your comments about Notting Hill Books. It's the most friendly bookshop I've encountered in over 40 years of collecting!
Thanks for your pointer to the series groups. I'm a young user (only 1 month), and everyday I learn something new about LT.

Regarding the pic, yes it's Botticelli's Calumny of Apelles.
Congratulations for your large library!
Just a remark. I've seen you have created a series named "The writer and the city". I don't think it can be considered a series.
From the series page:
What isn't a series?

Series was designed to cover groups of books generally understood as such (see Wikipedia: Book series). Like many concepts in the book world, "series" is a somewhat fluid and contested notion. A good rule of thumb is that series have a conventional name and are intentional creations, on the part of the author or publisher. For now, avoid forcing the issue with mere "lists" of works possessing an arbitrary shared characteristic, such as relating to a particular place. Avoid series that cross authors, unless the authors were or became aware of the series identification (eg., avoid lumping Jane Austen with her continuators).

Peace,
Glad to meet another Tarkovski fan. Just like you I have seen all his seven major films several times and I consider them all with no exception as masterpieces; I particularly cherish Stalker, Andrei Roeblov and Offret. Remembering the moment I saw them first, they hit me straight in the face like an unexpected oracle, undisclosing hidden feelings I have always felt immanent in my soul. I feel that Ingmar Bergmans once made statement that "Andrei Tarkovski was in possession of a key to a room no other filmdirector was able to open" is very poignant and summarizes very well what this russian methaphysical and artistic genius was able to make out of cinema.
I still ought to thank you for pointing me out as an interesting library on last March 6th.
Thank you so much!

kind regards,
Hans.
We share a lot of books. Probably lots more because I only have a few
representatives cataloged. We probably also share some film interests.
I'll have to check out dvdspot again.
I love hearing from people, even if I need a while to reply, so please feel free to leave a comment (or a few.)

I don't want to be a member of any groups. However, take no offence if I don't join yours, since I do follow several. If you'd like to draw my attention to a group, please leave an invitation or a link, and I'll certainly go through it.
