Tietoja kirjastostani I keep whittling away so that it contains books which I hope to pick up again. And now that I have started recording books in the spare room, Steve's are now on here too: hence the increase in science fiction and thrillers.

Hi again. Thanks for your reply. I certainly do like my Ians and Iains. Although I often get confused as to which is which! You are certainly very well read. How do you find the time? Or are you 132?

I knew I'd neglected this site for some time, but hadn't realised it was since October! I still haven't read "...Rubber Ducks". I've been busy at work the last few months and my home reading has been confined to magazines. I read Lewycka's "Two Caravans" whilst on holiday in Portugal last month. Darker than her debut, but good stuff and I raced through to the end. Similarly, at Christmas, I read a couple of sports autobiographies, which I'm guessing you won't be interested in.

It seems to me that Bulgarian fiction is extremely difficult to access in translation. I think part of this is the inherent difficulty of the language to bend to translation. Your best policy is to check amazon.com.

As far as I know, most Bulgarian fiction tends not to be translated.

hi essexgirl,
thanks for adding me as an intresting library. i'm only adding books as i read them so it will be a while before it becomes very impressive. i see you like female writers, i'm reading 'The dream life of Sukhanov' by Olga Grushin. i picked it up on a whim and was imeadietly swept away. she's russian. als if you really want a recomendation i'd say 'Night Night' by sharman macdonald. that book really amazed me and i'm shocked that i'm the only person on LT that has it.

Keeping a booklog is definitely a pain, but I can't seem to stop doing it now I've started.

"Female Author" is an interesting tag. I should do that, because I've long meant to analyze my reading habits by author's gender -- I suspect I read far more books by women than by men.

If you like Virago Modern Classics (I just bought a bunch last weekend), have you checked out Persephone Books? They do lovely reprint editions of forgotten women's classics.

Just thought I'd say hello, as a fellow Essex girl and a lover of similar authors. Have stopped aiming to add everything to LT as initial enthusiasm waned.... am now using it to record what I read, when. Looking at your list reminded me that 'Wind-up Bird Chronicle' is on my 'to read shelf' - think it might be next!

Also Jane Urquahart is good and I love anything by Rohinton Mistry and Timothy Findley. Also Mme Proust and the Kosher Kitchen by Kate Taylor is excellent as is the Birth House by Ami McKay.

I see you have a great fiction library! Betty MacDonald is an old favorite of mine. I loved her Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books as a child and have enjoyed her autobiographical books as an adult. If you liked "The Egg and I" you might try "The Plague and I" and "Onions in the Stew."

I'm sorry. My social manners have been terrible. I've been torn away from LT by work and other pressures, and never responded to your post. Thank you very much for the recommendations. I have added them to the growing list of books I am keeping an eye out for.

I also really enjoyed Nicholas Krauss and I notice that you've added Hari Kunzu as your favourite author. I loved The Impressionist and keep meaning to buy Transmission. I definitely need to find time for a longer browse through your library for other ideas!

i love the rows of orange spines on the bookcase too! Maybe it's because I remember that from childhood! I'm not so keen on the more modern ones, even if they're orange they usually have some nasty font!
