Tietoja minusta I live in Ottawa, Canada's capital. I live for books!
Boo! Summer is over but it's hot like a sauna & I read heaps during my free reading time. Now it is back to school, next week in fact. Part-time classes + full-time work. :(
My book group starts up next week with local author, Alan Cumyn visiting us to discuss his book "Losing It". And oooooo La La what a book! Best way to describe it is: the car wreck you just can't take your eyes off of as you're driving past slowly! It's interesting to say the least and to me, has movie written all over it. Anyhow looking forward to meeting the author and discussing the book.
Yup it was an unusually rainy summer but now it's summer in high gear. Sorta wierd. Looking forward to fall and the events and and getting super busy.
Coming Soon:
Rockcliffe Park Public School BOOKFAIR! November 7th to the 9th, 2008. It's the 47th year and is one of the very best in the city.

LibraryThing Early Reviewers

Tietoja kirjastostani I just rented a storage unit to get rid of some clutter in the ol' shoebox and to (hopefully) make room for some more book space! Yay me. I'm just books away from hitting the 1200 mark and can't believe how quickly my library grows! I'm always on the look out for books that might be good for my book group and have compiled quite a list of local book sales.
Happy Reading!

Haven't heard from you in an age! Hope all is well and you haven't been buried under a tumbling pile of books...
Hiya,

The McGill book fair is in October, usually on the Wednesday and Thursday before the last weekend in the month (so presumably the 22nd and 23rd this year). It's well worth it! As for not going to more sales, I guess I just don't know about them, because if I did, I would go to more! (I do go to a couple of other small ones occasionally, but the pickings are not as good.)

Glad you joined the Women of Mystery group! Of course Lisa Scottoline's books count! Feel free to post.

Good luck with your accounting course!
I love book sales--they are better than Christmas in my books! (Oh dear.) I go to two every year (if I can manage it) and they happen to be in the same week: the McGill book fair and another one in Quebec City. Love love love them, but usually wind up coming home with a box of books each time (30+ books!), which makes my partner despair. I'm glad you found a home for those textbooks!

Did you get an ER book this month? I'm still waiting for my March book, but I'm also excited about my April book now! (I got The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton.) I love LT!

By the way, I don't know if you're a mystery fan, but I started a new group called Women of Mystery: http://www.librarything.com/groups/women...
Hi,

Haven't talked in a while! Glad you loved The Story of Forgetting too. It was an unexpected find.

How was your book sale this year?

Best,
Nancy / alphaorder
How did the book sale go? Hope it was fun and you found a few (or more!) great books!
Hey Clam,

Did I miss the storm of the century or what?! I heard that Ottawa got 52 cm of snow, is that true? We were so lucky that we left when we did, between two storms... Anyway, had a great time on the West Coast and the weather was great (mostly sunny all the time, with green grass and flowers & trees in bloom...). Why do we live here again?

Yeah, I added the first few bookstores to Library Local for Montreal before I left and by the time I got back the map was full! Amazing.

I also snagged another ER books (YAY!), but haven't received it yet. Did you get one for March?

Hope your book sale goes well!

:)

Hello again,

I hope you're feeling better! Yeah, the only good thing about being sick is that you get to do lots of reading, as long as you feel up to it.

Mostly I do translate stuff in the tourism and education fields. Weird combo, but it works for me.

I'm off to BC in a couple of days for two and a half weeks, visiting friends in Vancouver and my sister on Saltspring. I can't wait. Although I expect I'll suffer from LT withdrawal. I'm on this site entirely too often (when I should be working instead!).

Take care,
Avis
Hi again,

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply; I had a huge project I had to finish this week (I'm a translator). Finally handed in the last of it yesterday...

Nope, haven't read Haven Kimmel, but I have one of her books, which I bought at a book fair last year.

I saw the movie Running with Scissors, but haven't read the book. It was a little over the top for my taste. (Not that I disbelieve the craziness of what was going on; I just felt like it was sensationalized.) Didn't really want to read the book, I must admit.

I heard about LT from a genealogy newsletter that I get, strangely enough. How did you hear about it?

Hope your week is going well!
Avis
Hi again,

I'm glad you were finally able to post the bird and your tickers!

I noticed you just added Truth & Beauty to your catalogue; I read that book recently and loved it. I haven't read anything else by Ann Patchett yet, but I'm looking forward to reading Bel Canto.

What do you do for libraries when you sign up to help with their used book fundraisers?

No, can't say I keep a book journal; have enough trouble writing a regular journal!

Avis
Hiya,

Yeah, I opened "Edit profile" and pasted it in my "About me" section. First I pasted the code for the bird and then I think I hit enter and pasted the code for the ticker. It worked really easily for me...

Congrats on your book group being 4 years old! That's great. I will check out the library one, as soon as they do a book I'm into reading...

Have a great rest of the weekend,
Avis
Hi Clam,

Cut and paste the html code (next to the bird of your choice) into your profile and voilà! The ER bird will appear on your profile page. Same thing for the ticker - once you've created one, the html code should appear underneath it.

I'm rereading Winter Rose by Patricia McKillip (I want to read the sequel Solstice Wood, but I couldn't remember what happened in this book!), as well as Sitting Practice (Early Reviewer book). (I hope the italics work this time!)

Yeah, I think there's a book group at the local library; I should check it out.

Take care,
Avis
For the ER bird, go here: www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Earl...
For the ladybug, you have to create your own ticker at www.tickerfactory.com

Thanks for the Friends invite! Does the invite go out automatically when you try to make someone a friend? I've never tried that.

I didn't grow up Catholic, but I did do the next best thing, I went to a Catholic elementary school! So my perspective is an outsider's one, but I'm still somewhat familiar with that experience (and definitely somewhat fascinated by it too!).

I haven't started double-stacking, but I must admit I've got several boxes of books in my office, which I hate because I forget then what I already own. I've also done what you just did and bought books I'd already had, which is very frustrating.

Being part of a book group sounds like fun! Did you start yours?

Hi again,

Thanks for the birthday wishes! I know, LT has made me realize that I have so many books I haven't read yet (368 and counting), but it also makes me want to buy more! We are starting to run out of room (and we already have bookcases in every room of our apartment!). Hey, I noticed you reviewed Too Close to the Falls by Catherine Gildiner. Have you read her novel, Seduction? I actually can't recommend it; I thought the plot was too far-fetched. I'm curious about her memoir though, it sounds interesting! I've gotta say I loved Chocolat the movie, but the book is even better. And the sequel is holding up so far. I'm expecting my 3rd ER book any day now; it should actually have gotten here before the Chocolat sequel. I hadn't looked at your library properly until now; you're right, looking at the covers is great. Oh and of course it means I will add a few books to my Amazon wish list...

avisannschild
Hmm, me again. Sorry I don't think my use of italics in that last comment worked! Oh well.

;)

Hi again,

Yeah, after reading a few reviews of Sheri Holman's other books I'm not sure I want to risk it. I'd never heard of Astrid and Veronika; yet another to add to my list... I love LT; I must admit I'm a bit obsessed! Are you an Early Reviewer as well? I just got a copy of Joanne Harris' latest book, the sequel to Chocolat, which I'm loving. Do you like her stuff? I haven't read much so far, just Chocolat (which I don't own but have read twice!) and Holy Fools, which is also good (though I like Chocolat better). I also just received The Thirteenth Tale for my birthday; I asked for it based on LT recommendations. Have you read it?

Cheers from Montréal,
avisannschild
Hi Clamato,

Thanks for your message and your recommendations. I loved The Dress Lodger, though I haven't read her other books (have you?). I'm looking forward to reading The History of Love, which I own, and I'll add A History of Forgetting to my wish list!

Thanks again,
avisannschild
Just added [Old Filth] to my wishlist because of you.

Hope you are doing well.

Happy New Year,
alphaorder
I absolutely loved The Archivist! Move it to teh top of your list and enjoy!
