Hi: I just visited your blog and its great. I am an avid fan of Boston and the first time I visited the public library I cried. So many choices, so many books - it makes our pathetic little Montreal libraries look like --- well --- the pathetic little libraries they unfortunately are :(

A pleasure - it was absolutely brilliant all the more so as I learnt about an episode in the second world war that I had never heard about before. The respect and care for your neighbour regardless of faith, gender or nationality was like a beacon!

Hi Marie - The Pilgrim Road comprises a travel story with a message for each day of the lenten season. It is written by a Benedcitine monk from Newark who was given a sabbatical year away from his teaching duties. What I especially love is that a number of the places he visits are either ones I know because I have visited them myself or I know of them! In a nutshell it explores the deeper meaning and richness of life as we travel on - for me it is a quietly inspirational read.
I notice that you are just reading a Mary Doria Russell - I have just completed A Thread of Grace - five star excellence in my humble opinion.

What is manga and does it come in audio form? Based on your recommendation, I'm currently looking for a used audio for Possession. Eye damage prevents me from reading novels and I'm currently in a rut as to what to get next in the audio area. By the way, we have the same quilt book (the kitty book). Take care!

January 15 - Volume I (through 3 parts)
February 15 - Volume II (through 8 parts)
March 15 - Volume III (through 11 parts)
April 15 - Volume IV (through 15 parts)
Discussions will begin on the date listed, and it will be assumed members will have read the specific volume listed before that date. Each volume is approximately 300 pages.
I am reading the Pevear and Volkhonsky translation and I am loving it!

Thanks Marie - yes I have read Suite Francaise - a five star read for me! At about the same time I also read this much more obscure book that may be of interest to you;
Those Who Trespass Against Us: One Woman's War Against the Nazis by Karolina Lanckoronska (ISBN 1844134172). http://www.librarything.com/work/930927

I found it incredible and was often wishing to record quotes. Please indulge me if I share a couple here;
Having just given a young consumptive soldier a drink the author Karolina Lanckoronska wrote

'For my part I reflected, for the thousandth time in my life, that to make education available to all who want it, without lowering standards, is one of humanity's highest ideals'.
The dying soldier had become more and more attached to Karolina who was working for the Polish Red Cross. He had shared details of his life from how he read all the books in his village library to domestic details about his Mother's cooking. As a countess she had had a privileged upbringing and was in fact a university lecturer. On hearing this the soldier was incredulous that she should be caring for him....

Thought of the day quote
'Over the next few days we removed everything of value from the flat and stored it for safe keeping with people we knew. That brought home to me how very uncomfortable it is to have possessions - though I was soon to learn that it's equally uncomfortable not to have any.'
How does this speak to me, my possessions and of materialism ......

Marie - I just saw your santa thing info, came to your library and just had to comment. Possession is my all time favourite as well! I am participating in a challenge to read 8 books in 8 categories for 2008. One of my categories is war and women so I am going to be reading a number of WW2 books, a number related to the Holocaust. I love your quilt - you certainly have a lot of quilting patterns!

How are you liking Gods Behaving Badly? I read it for the Amazon Vine program, and while I started out a bit dubious about the concept, I decided it was a hoot!
