Hey, I just noticed that someone on your comments made a reference to the Asylum Street Spankers. I saw them a few times around 10 years ago, when I lived in Austin. I didn't go too often, because I worked a guy who always hung around at their shows, and who was a certifiable jack@ss.* Ah memories.

Hello, I came here from the Nabokov discussion. Looks like we pretty much agree that Lolita is a catalyst for Humbert's self-destruction. Or something.

But the reason I'm leaving you a message is that I noticed you have some "Lost" related tags. Are you aware of any LT groups that deal specifically with the series? I'm hesitant to instigate a Television group on a site for book lovers, but I also know the Jane Austen aficionados have their own discussions re the PBS series.

A group called Reading "Lost" might be useful for discussing the various psychological, philosophical, and literary references in the show, especially as they might be of interest to bookish types.

I saw your reference to 'The Seal' on another thread; I can't remember which one so I'll post the answer here. It's called 'Gosling's Black Seal Rum' - best stuff in the world. My Bermudian relatives bring me bottles of the stuff when they come to visit. Although Goslings is a Bermudian based company (like Bacardi), the stuff is actually made in Jamaica. Un Lun Dun is downright "whimsical" but with China's complex imaginings! Fabulous people and creatures and a bit of a quest story (like Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz) but with a bit of a twist. A fun read. I'm not sure if he will write more than three of the Bas Lag novels. He strikes me as an author who wants to do something different every time. Still, I will read anything the man writes.

A friend loaned me Lost Girls, because I am such a big Moore fan. She warned me about the graphic sex, so I was prepared for that. After the second volume it was starting to bore me, but she needed it back, so I plowed through the third volume in one sitting. The last few panels blew me away, and made the whole journey worthwhile. Most people I know who read it get bogged down in the overwhelming deluge of sex, but if you can get past it, it really has a punch.

As I'm always looking for something new, I've been through your author's gallery and I think that I just must add Anne Ursu to mine...what a lovely portrait and it's in black as white as well. I suppose it's silly to choose authors this way but there are just so many.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck in NYC and of course we'll always have Paris, but if I was young and had it all to do again I'd go to Asia: Bangkok, Vientiane, Hanoi...and most especially Vientiane

I`m in two minds about our little playmate, I`m not sure he`s as harmless as all that - I may be wrong, but I suspect he could be in the MrKris category. Having said that, I`m alays wary of reading too much into the written word, as sometimes `tone of voice` completely alters interpretation.

Anyway, that`s all a bit serious.

You will indeed see me back on LT in due course, but at the moment our little book business is having a Xmas rush and we have other stuff to do - also we`re looking to leave Nott`m for the Derbyshire mining town (former mining town I should say) of Heanor - hopefully in Jan.

Another thing about LT is - every time I go on the system, some bugger breaks my concentration by knocking at the door - which is what`s just happened ! Must go.

Well, I couldn't tell you. She just loves to sleep on my books whenever I leave them on my bed. And it doesn't matter if they're thin or inches thick. I guess she wishes she could read... The other two kitties sleep at a respectful distance from whatever I have laying around. But then Artemis (the one on the picture) IS the smartest one of the bunch. I'd love to discuss Nietzsche with her because my roommates aren't very useful for that. They don't read, or sleep on books...

The Chilis were great! I already saw them twice about ten years ago but was really disappointed both times so I gave them another chance yesterday. And it was worth it. So I think the next time they come to Zurich, I'll be there again.

Nice! Are you reading the 1001 like I am, that would be awesome to read at the same pace as someone and the same books. Im doing it like this in chronological order. 1 from pre-1700, 1 from 1700, 2 from 1800, 4 from 1900, and 1 from 2000. Then again and again till i get it done.

Hey-

I just love your idea on what to use for bookmarks (thread in Book Talk). I had never thought of using paint samples, but it's worked out pretty nicely. I picked up some at Home Depot, and they are Disney paint samples! They are a little square with Mickey's Head in the bright about what a clever idea it is! Thanks for the suggestion!

Just a quick note to say I`ve seen your reply to me re : Banned books. There`s an interesting discussion to be had here, but I thought I`d see what responses others come up with before responding.

I`m still not entirely clear whether the same situation applies in the UK as US - the impression I get from you and others is that you`re talking about a situation where, eg, a library is told they cannot or should not order a given title, presumably by someone in authority.

I`m not entirely clear whether that would be the situation over here. One difference might be that in the UK, the librarian in a public library is ultimately responsible to an elected local council (local authority). I wonder if that`s the same in America ?

Anyway, that was just me thinking aloud, I really just wanted to say thanks for replying to my posting etc.

Yes! I subscribed to Tin House this year after finding 3 of last year's issues at a used bookstore (got all 3 for $1.00). Great stuff, although it took 3 months for me to get the first issue. Am trying to wait patiently for the next one.
