Tietoja minusta British but have lived in Malaysia for the past 23 years. teacher and teacher-trainer by profession, but now taking time out to write and to run my own creative writing classes. I write reviews and articles about books and writing for several publications and am a rabid litblogger! Completely bookaddicted.

Tietoja kirjastostani I reckon I have a couple of thousand in total, but haven't yet got them all entered. The whole house looks like a library and I've just bought more bookcases to begin the literary colonisation of yet another room.

Some of my books have travelled across the world with me two or three times. My novels are always in perfect alphabetical order when I can't even keep my handbag tidy. My to-be-read-shelf will keep me busy for the rest of my life. But I can't walk past a bookshop without buying at least one book. Amazon one-click is a bookaholic's nightmare.

and you should try reading Pramoedya Ananta Toer. excellent indonesian writer. i've got a couple of his books if you're interested in reading them. i'm still searching for a set of his 4 volume epic.

interesting library and i noticed you also found the hazard of that one-click amazon button. the pavilions has a times bookshop with a decent lit section. i too have been here for years. originally from the u.s. ... are you still teaching creative writing? i would be interested in more information.

Oh, the spending is bad... I did a proper, grown-up budget last month and analysed my spending. The results were not pretty... the dangers of working for a bookshop and getting a staff discount!! Thanks for adding me back, and I'll certainly drop by your blog.

Hi there,

Sorry it's taken me so long to comment back! My life gets very interesting during Booker season! We call my husband The Booker Widow during the months of August through October! I do love the Booker, although I sometimes disagree with the judges! I thought Tan Twan Eng should have won hands down this year! What an amazing novel! It's nice to meet someone else who is trying to read all of them like I am!

I stumbled upon your blog by looking for the word bibliobibuli to use as a blog name. At first I was so disappointed that the name was already in use (I just LOVE the word, and its meaning suits me just so - but I guess it suits all of us here at LibraryThing, eh?), but then I found out that you were a fellow LTer and that made me feel better :D

It wasn't meant to be!!

The reason I think fellow LTers will like FindLikeMinds.com is because it's about the most special, influential things in life. I don't know about you, but I'd love to discover say another 'Perfume' because I found someone who liked some of the same music, movies and poetry as me. But more than that, they not just share them; they feel the same way as I do about them making us of like mind?

Hope this makes amend for my Faux pas.

I enjoyed reading your review of 'Painter of Signs' - I think the Alexander McCall Smith connection is that they are books in which values are respected and life is less complex than in today's increasingly unrecognisable society. I shall continue to read your reviews.

I ran across your review of The Joy of Sex while checking out the group zietgeist for "The Prizes" group. Have you read Meg Wolitzer's The Position, by chance? It was longlisted for the Orange Prize last year. Here's a synopsis from The New Yorker

"Wolitzer's novel of sexual politics and family farce continues in the dark comic vein that she mined in "The Wife." In the nineteenseventies, at the height of the sexual revolution, a married couple, aptly named Mellow, publish a liberated sex manual that features pictures of themselves and includes a sexual position—"Electric Forgiveness"—that they claim to have invented. The manual becomes an epochal best-seller. The publication, decades later, of a new edition of the notorious classic is a catalyst for a plot that examines the effects of this legacy on the adult children of the Mellows, who are now divorced. These effects are variously hilarious, disabling, painful, embarrassing, and, ultimately, empowering. Wolitzer's comic timing never wavers, and she has an astute grasp of the way one generation's liberation inspires the next generation's pity."

I thought it a delightful and thoughtful read and thought you might find it interesting also...

Hi Sharon,
I still feel a little miserable when I think of all the books I no longer own. The pain is even worse when I go over to a friend's or sibling's house and see 'my' books on their shelves. Oh well, somehow life goes on!

I have been reading a lot of popular science lately, including lots of neurology and brain-related books. Just fascinating. One of Sack's colleagues (can't recollect his name, but I will look it up) writes about phantom limbs and the experiences of his patients are startling.

I am going to explore your favourites now! Isn't this a great website?

you led me to librarything - but I am way behind you in cataloguing my books. I made a rule that I would catalogue them as I read them. At the rate I'm going I may have to leave this task to my heirs.

PS What does MPH stand for exactly? My daughter asked me the other day and I was stumped!

Sharon, blogging your book club events is a GREAT idea. You know, I just started doing that this week? http://mypeopleconnection.blogspot.com/ I wish I thought of it earlier.

You know, you're welcome to post your events on our My People Connection site. We can host events all around the world now. And nothing would make me happier than promoting book clubs & encouraging more people to read and make good new friends over books. It's free - I founded the organization when I moved to Los Angeles & didn't know anyone. We host a lot of events now that go beyond book club.

Don't know if you have a Craigslist.org in Malaysia, but it's another great resource for getting the word out. A good friend of mine is from Malaysia (lives in Chicago now), so I can ask him of some other ways you can reach more folks. Don't get discouraged or give up - it took me a while to get our LA group going, but after 7 years now, we're hosting an average of 165 events each month - all for free, just pay your own way - including 6 distinct book clubs. Woohoo! :-)

And definitely hit our boards with some questions about promoting your book club. I'm sure others have the same thoughts.

hi sharon, i commented in your blog once; when you wrote about bigbookshop warehouse sale. and here i am, in librarything (knew about it at teddy's blog), i notice we share few books in common, but besides the best-sellers, i'm quite excited to know you also read (and most likely have) 'good care for cats: how to keep your cat in perfect health'. hahahahh..

i got it at times bookstore warehouse sale 3 years back, it must be sometime and maybe the last print too, since when i got my hands on it, the book already turn a little bit yellowish, but at RM1 and readable, who can resist it?
