You ask Is there any truth to the thinking that the Chinese are more "Right Brained" and Westerners, who use the alphabet more Left Brain" oriented?

The short answer is no. That whole left-right brain thing is another junk meme left over from the pop psych of the 1960's.

If you need a longer answer, sorry, that would have to wait a few days.

Classes would be a wild exaggeration. More like an introduction/demonstration module in the compact crash Japanese course (2h lectures, 2h oral practice, 2h writing hiragana/katakana/simple kanji weekly) I took at university. I was a basket case, making a mess out of the correct stroke order and never getting the pressure right ...
