Tietoja minusta 77, married, retired systems analyst and programmer. (Cobol, IMS, DB2, CICS). In Florida for the winter, and Poughkeepsie in the summer. Amateur oratorio singer and painter. Taught fine art before computer systems. Product of Hutchins college at the U of Chicago in the 40's. In love with literature, classical music, jazz and expressionist and abstract art. Liberal humanist, feminist. Mother, stepmother and grandmother. My wish list of books I haven't acquired or borrowed yet is on 'almigwinwishlist' in LT.

Tietoja kirjastostani Mostly english 19th and 20th century fiction, literary criticsm and literary biography. Poetry in french, german, spanish, italian, portugese, hebrew, yiddish and russian. I read them all except russian, yiddish and portugese. I can speak and understand yiddish but my reading is halting. My hebrew is very primitive,(reading only from biblical studies), my russian is minimal and my portugese is nonexistant. It would be worth mastering for Pessoa. I love the modern Polish poets but do not read Polish, so depend on translation. I try to get the complete works of the poets and novelists that are important, or that I love, or both. I have a lot of dual language poetry books and anthologies of poetry and short stories. I have a few hundred art books, some history and philosophy. some science especially physics.lots of cookbooks-french, italian, chinese, mediteranean.
Complete Sets
I have attempted to get all of the works of these authors; Anthony Trollope, Wm Shakespeare, Tobias Smollett, DeFoe, Stendahl, Fielding, Dickens, Fanny Burney, Sterne, Austen, Maria Edgeworth, George Eliot, Wm. Makepeace Thackeray, Honore de Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, marcel Proust, Henry James, Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Willliam Gass, Joseph Roth, Sebald, Ivan Turgenev, Anton Checkov, Nikolai Gogol, Vladimir Nabokov, Ivan Goncharov, Vasily Grossman, Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, Anita Brookner, Louis Begley, Emerson, Thoreau, Plato, Hume, Locke, Mill, Homer, and recordings of all the works of Bach and Mozart (In complete boxed sets from Daedelus books recorded in Europe on cd). Also have All of Zola in translation and the New Yorker on 8 cd roms.

Hi Miriam:

Now it is my turn to be flattered as I see you have added my library to your list. It has grown slowly this week as Comcast, our server, has been on and off. I am back at my own computer today from where I prefer to send out messages to internet friends.

I'm glad you enjoyed Monica. After givng Duncan a raving review and then learning you had ordered some of her books, I was hoping you would be pleased. I read Monica this spring, but over many weeks due to family issues, not the best way to read anything. Next on my list to read, as I am reading in order of publication, is "My Friend Sandy", but not until I finish a bit of May Sarton. I read most of Duncan during 6 week stretches in Wisconsin, checked out of local libraries, during the last two summers my mom was alive. I am sure this is part of the reason her books, so much about family, resonated with me. You have probably discovered some of her books are much more difficult to find and can be very expensive, notably, "My Friends George and Tom". I owe my copy to our son Nate, a savvy bidder on ebay, who got a sound copy for under $100. As I recall, this is one of her best books.

I have begun to list our vast music collection. I know from your bio profile and things in you library that we have many musical overlaps as you will eventually see. I made the mistake of not tagging in the beginning, something I still need to work on with 150 books still looking for some kind of a home. One of my tags is the "Beau Hunks". Do you know this group? Although their area isn't Jazz, this group from Amsterdam is very much interested in American music from the first half of the 20th century. Their recordings always provide wonderful performances, and you can hear samples of their work on various internet sites.

I did note, when I first looked at your library, your oratorio singing, and I am in awe of your many languages. WOW! I am hoping to get back to some German and Swahili in retirement, but it hasn't happened yet. Muriel
Hello Miriam--

I came across your library when checking on the almost defunct LT group titled "Bellow." It doesn't seem like there is much going on. I am a former Chicagoan and have always had a penchant for Bellow since I started reading him in college. My mother went to the same high school (Tuley High). I have 80 of the books in your library and I've tagged your library as interesting. When I have more time I will browse. Have a look at mine when you have a chance. I think we have much in common. Sure wish we could stir some lit crit on Bellow.

Suzanne
