Are you still pleased I suggested "Sarah's Key"? I liked the different viewpoint offered, but thought it suffered from a poor translation. She did the translation herself and should have left it to an able translator. I am firmly of the belief that just because you can write well, doesn't mean you are equally talented as a translator, editor or proofreader. There are exceptions, but...

So, St. Cyr. I am going to look at a few reviews and add a few to my wishlist.

Have you noticed how fantastic our library system is here? I'd noticed that different branches have different stock, and while the Augusta Road branch is Our Branch, I am near the Mauldin one as well and stop by the Simpsonville (best selection of books on CD) branch when I visit my parents. I had two books from my wishlist transferred to Augusta Road and while I was getting them I saw another.
Have you tried Tatiana de Rosnay's "Sarah's Key"? It's not a fantastic book, but the author is French and has a feel for Paris during WWII.
You're on a WWII noir kick. I think that may be my favorite genre (along with dark, depressing mysteries by Scottish authors). Have you read Phillip Kerr's Berlin trilogy? Chris Bohjalian's "Skeletons at the Feast" is also good, but it's not a thriller or mystery. It follows the fortunes of a German family living in Poland who had done well through the war but have to come to terms with what had been done at the end of the war. Excellent, but not uplifting.

I am thinking of avoiding my wishlist for a few weeks just to see if I can (why do I feel I need a support group in the style of AA to do this? It's not like I don't have anything to read!) So the new Gillian Flynn will not be added to my wishlist, although I will now start to keep an eye out for it at the library!
Hi V! Thanks for the nice note this morning! I was actually thinking of you because I just finished An Acquaintance with Darkness. I haven't posted my review yet, but I really liked it. I loved how it was written with a richness to the historical details, but still very exciting and captivating with the plot. The history was incorporated so well into the story that at times I was questioning if any of the characters were fictional! Thanks for recommending it! Have you read anything else by Rinaldi? She's a wonderful writer but I don't know what else of hers to turn to next. Hope things are going great for you! :)
Thank you very much for checking out my photo's... you are most kind, that snail was a hungry little fella ;-)

Have a good day, and I'll see you in the Green Dragon.
Hey, yeah I loved [Violet Eyes] and [Silver Eyes]. [Violet Eyes] is definitely my favorite! I was dismayed to find that there weren't any other in that series. But that's awesome if Luiken is writing more! Do you know anywhere that I can keep an eye on news like that?
Thanks so much for your comment! I try very hard with my reviews, and I love it when someone finds them helpful. I read your review of The Coffin Quilt and I have to agree that part of my disappointment stems from not having a strong characters - Rinaldi is usually so good with that.
I hope she returns to that theme in The Redheaded Princess (up soon on my TBR pile) because I'll just have to cry if I see another weak interpretation of Elizabeth I (I'm looking at you Phillippa Gregory).
Just had to point out that I laughed when I read the part of your comment "I think I thrive on closure...Yes, I'm going to try NaNo again." Hee hee.... NaNo and closure - maybe that's why you won. ;) NaNo Buddies for sure! We got 6 months to plan, right? :)
Hi V - I do agree on Sunshine. I thought that there would have been more significance to Con's interaction with her father and I kept expecting the red dress to mean something or come back into play. I almost feel like it's waiting for a sequel, and though it wasn't my favorite I'm sure I would read it if she writes a part 2! Thanks for the other suggestions. I've been trying to read more independent authors so I might hunt down the ones you mentioned. I just read a really good Print on Demand one called Adelaide Einstein. I think it's neat to support authors that might not get as much notice from big publishers. If you enjoyed Fevre Dream though, another one I'd recommend to is a non-series science fiction book from GRRM called Dying of the Light. I'm not sure if you generally like sci-fi but it was actually the first GRRM book I read and I remember that I was really entranced with his storytelling.

I probably will do NaNo '08 although lots of people are warning me that the second year is the hardest. I'm trying not to get scared off. ;) I might try doing something with a fantasy twist just to go for something completely different than last year. I've been trying to go back to my '07 work and edit it. I keep waffling between thinking that it's worth working on and wanting to give up on the whole thing. Do you think you'll go for '08? It still seems so far away but I guess it's not too far off!
Hi V -
Have you read Sunshine? I don't want to give any spoilers if it's on your TBR. It was an okay book. I think I expected it to be better because I had heard so many good things about it. I did enjoy it and I liked the characters a lot but I felt like there were a lot of unresolved/unexplained things at the end. There was a lot of set up that I took to be foreshadowing that never went anywhere and that seemed a little odd to me. Overall, it was an interesting read though. But I noticed we have George R.R. Martin's Fevre Dream in common and in terms of a vampire novel by a fantasy writer I liked that one better. :) Anything you've read lately that you'd highly recommend?
el :)
Hi V- I was thinking of you when I started reading Find Me cause I remember that you're also a Carol O'Connell fan! I really like her writing. It amazes me that after so many books her characters and plots still seem so fresh and exciting. I did like Inkheart as well. Did you like it? It's gotten a lot of mixed reviews on LT. There were a few parts where the pacing was a little slow but I enjoyed the story and will probably get to Inkspell sometime this year. The movie looks like it will be pretty neat too. Hope things are going well for you. Did you ever do any more work on your novel? I've been picking mine up sporadically and rewriting some sections. It makes for a nice hobby. Take care, el :)
I think my previous comment got eaten; I'll try again (apologies if it double-posts!)

I am enjoying Inkspell surprisingly much, considering that I wasn't bowled over by Inkheart. I'm a little shy of halfway through (disc 7 of 16), but so far it's been interesting, and I've got an idea about where the story's going that seems like it's going to play out in a cool way. I really like the chapters from the other (non-Meggie) points of view, particularly Dustfinger's. It probably doesn't hurt that since seeing the movie trailers for Inkheart, Dustfinger now looks like Paul Bettany in my head. :)

Any news on when the third one's going to be translated?
Think Like A Dinosaur or Ten16 to 1 I would choose at the moment, I think.
Hi Victoria --

Jeff & George are related -- cousins. But, John is related to neither.

Do you climb? I've still got ~100 more climbing books to catalogue. Then there ar ethe non-climbing books. Auuuuggghhh....!
I noticed that your favorite book is The Descent by Jeff Long, mine too!! I have had a lingering question about the book and I would love you input. At the beginning of the book when Ike's group is in the cave, is the corpse of Isaac really alive? I thought it was just a corpse but then later it says that Ike noticed it was smiling? Also, do you know of any forums or boards that Discuss Jeff Long's books?
