Tietoja kirjastostaniMost of it is in storage :( because I can't fit enough bookcases (or boxes) into my apartment to hold all the books I own. I borrow a lot of books from the library these days, which leads me to believe that the profile of my reading habit is completely askew, but that can't be helped.

Glad to hear you received your book. I am reading another book at the same time so I keep switching between the two books. I hope you have a good time at your holiday party.
Well, I am quite behind in my writing but I am persisting and hope to still make it. I'll let you know if I do. I think of it this way, at least I will have a lot of material to revise when it is all over. MB
Hi, just dropping by to see how you are doing with your novel. I am not doing as well as I had thought but I have plugged along and continue to wotk on it almost every day so...I guess I can't ask for more than that. Mary Beth
Hi Mary- Good morning! Well I started the Charlie Huston thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/76122
Spread the word, it should be a riot! Have a great weekend!
Mark
Hi S, I signed up for NaNo and my name there is pagedove. I have begun to get my novel together in my head and on paper, as far as characters and plot go. The basic idea, the characters tentative names, etc and I must admit it is exciting and encouraging to think I will have the support of others. Writing, while being my passion is also quite a challenge. See you there, MB
Mary, Just dropping by to say Hello to everybody I see on the NaNoWriMo thread. We have quite a few books in common that we have read or listened to. I love a good audiobook, but will never give up reading until the eyes give out (not sure that is too far away)Loved "The Graveyard Book" Oscar Wao, and absolutely LOVED "Mistress of the Art of Death." Can't wait to read other books by her. See you in November! Mary Beth PS. Nickel is sooo sweet. I had a rabbit named Cinder because of her lovely lavender/silvery ashy color. Then there was Ruby, for her thick rusty coat. Nickel is a great name.
I love the parrot! How did you come upon the name Nickel?
We haven't chatted in awhile... saw your note in the NaNo thread and thought I'd pop over and say Hi!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it!
Your article generated a lot of interest. You should stop by and take a look :-)
P.S. I like your parrot!
Hi, Stor! Interesting article, I did post it over on the group. I don't read quite as much Romance as I used to anymore either, but that group is one of my favorites on LT :-) Love to see you back again!
I'll be mailing an ARC of THE CAVALIER OF THE APOCALYPSE to you today or tomorrow (I hope--if something doesn't keep me from the post office!). Official launch date is July 21. Thanks for your interest!

Susanne
LOVE the bird!
Hi Storeetllr. I wanted to let you know I posted some answers on the difference between my book and the Cullen book. And thank you for the question.

Sorry it took so long: I have been planning an unusual book tour through the sites of school shootings, and I wasn't sure if the author chat completely ended June 1 (meaning I couldn't post any more comments) but I guess it's still live, so I am happy to talk more.
On the Talk tab, in the top left area, there's a search field. Pick some keywords from the message you want to identify and search for them. E.g. for Tim's post I searched for "Starring individual messages". With a lot of luck you'll find and recognize the message you're looking for. When you click the link, it will go directly to that message in the thread, and you can copy the URL from the address bar in your browser window.

Is Nickel an african grey parrot? (Not that I know anything about parrots, but my cousin and her husband have an african grey named Hector. He says "good bye" when you leave the room. He must be at least 20 years old, since that's how long I've known him.)
Thanks for the heads up! I didn't realize that and will take caution in the future! Good luck in the contest!
May I ask how far you are with "Last Prince" now? I am liking it better, but keep going in fits and starts. Something else keeps distracting me (I've started and finished 2 other books since starting it). Of course, part of that is the huge number of books I need to review/return to the library in the next month, so it may not be all the book's fault.
I love your picture and your new roommate. I once had a Scarlet Macaw. Love parrots.

Ficus
Hi, I saw your comment -- I finished Mosley's The Long Fall and will post a review in a few days. His new character is much like his others -- tough and tender, reflective, really likeable -- with an interesting inner circle of family and friends and a tone that's noir-ish. Good series potential. But there were waaay too many minor characters, introduced in ways that made it impossible to follow the storyline. :( argh!
Sorry, I got really confused and it took me a bit to figure it all out and click the right link.

Ficus
Hi Mary,

I'm so sorry it took me this long to answer your comment, I thought I had already. BTW -- I love the picture, you had a much better hair cut than I did way back when.

Are you still planning a trip to Gettysburg/Lancaster? I'm originally from northest PA, not too far away. My brother-in-law lived about 5 miles outside of Gettysburg for quite a few years, it's really great. I hope you enjoy your trip. Will you be there for the annual "Pickett's Charge" re-inactment in July?

As for Guersney -- someone swears it's their choice for next years Book Club list! YEA!! But our May meeting is far away and things change fast with this group...LOL
Hey Mary! Just checking in with you. Feels like we haven't 'talked' in forever. Hope things are going well.
Hi.
Did you know that "Of Mice and Men" has become an opera? Carlilse Floyd is the composer. It's good!
Hello - yes definitely you can combine your Lancaster visit. It's very close. There is not a whole lot of Civil War things going on in April or May - which makes it a good time to visit because it won't be as crowded. If you like the arts, however, April 18-19 is History Meets the Arts weekend so there are a lot of artists and authors in town.

There is only one hotel downtown, The Gettysburg Hotel, which is a little more expensive than others, but you are within walking distance of restaurants, bars, shopping.

Then there is a "tourist district" on Steinwehr Avenue with a Holiday Inn and a few others. If you google Steinwehr Ave. hotels, you should be able to find a couple. There is A LOT of shopping down there for Civil War type things. There are also many, many hotels within 2 or 3 miles, so you have your choice. (Oh, yea, one more hotel all by itself on west side of town, very quiet and beautiful w/ view of first day of fighting area is Larsen's Quality Inn).

Definite 'must sees' are Devil's Den and Little Round Top (Little Round Top at sunset if it's nice). Dobbin House and Farnsworth House on Steinwehr and Baltimore St. are two very historic houses that are now restaurants. Most tourists consider them must-dos. (I would too, except they are a little expensive).

Let me know if there is anything specific I can help you with!
Mary, thanks so much for the info and the link. I'm not working next week so I'll look into the assignments then. See you around, either here or there!
I loved The Glass Castle. You should read it ASAP, you won't regret it!
I did sign up. Not sure why I'm not receiving the assignments. But maybe it's for the best. I hope things work out for you.
Hey Mary! Just popping in to see how you're doing. I haven't seen any emails or instructions from Forward Motion. Are you still involved in the class?
Hi Mary! If you're still in my part of the world, you're probably hauling out the Ugg boots about now! Next time you're here, give me a heads up and maybe we can meet for coffee or some such. Hope you had a great Christmas. Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas!
Hi Stor! Thanks for the holiday greeting :-) I don't have much planned outside of the usual family get together. NYC is about a four hour trip from where I live. I love visiting the city (which I've only mangaed to do once in the last 20 years LOL) Christmas there must be quite something! On the kid front my 17 year old son has asked his 15 year old girlfriend to marry him *sigh* I think he even bought her a ring last night for Christmas. The upside is that they've agreed to wait until she graduates which is three long years away. Kids, they make you crazy! Hope you have a fantastic holiday!!
NaNoWriMo sounds like lots of fun the way you describe it. I've worked with critique groups, and my usual frustration is that other people aren't quite as committed as I am. It could be nice to do a total immersion for a month.

Do you write a new novel every year? Whew! It's always taken me several years to complete a novel manuscript. But then I do write long novels.
Well, Mary, given the latest weather reports, a) I hope you're able to get there on time! and b) sounds like you've made the right clothing choices. I have something funny I'll email you along weather lines.

in any event, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Joyce
I noticed on the "What Are You Reading the Week of 20 December 2008?" thread that you said you are reading "Treasury of Regrets" which you say is "a historical mystery set in the years just after the end of France's "Reign of Terror."

If you are like me and you sometimes feel like sticking with a certain era and genre, you might be interested in "The Black Tower" by Louis Bayard, about whom Bookmarks Magazine says, "Bayard draws his inspiration from history, and in this tight historical thriller, he revisits the tumultuous period following France’s Reign of Terror and Restoration."

Anyway, I just read this book recently, so it came to mind when I saw your comment. :)
Good heavens! A voice out of the distant past!! :-)

Doing just fine, Mary, and hope you are, too. What's been up, lately? I haven't seen any books listed that you've read recently. What's been happening?

Joyce
Well, I made a FM username, it's the same as LT and NaNo. I haven't really poked around the site yet. What's your username?
Hey Mary! Thanks for posting about Zette's 2YR course. I might sign up. I'm not sure yet, still mulling it over. Hope you have a wonderful week!! Is it sunny out there? If so, send me some rays!
I re-read Emma Bull's War for the Oaks. I stayed in the tub for three hours. It was fantastic to do that again. I have missed it. Went to our NaNo TGIO party tonight. Pizza. Yum.
Three ER books! What's your secret? I just don't have the luck when it comes to the ER program!
Hey Mary! Have you recovered yet? I'm so glad to be able to read again.
Hey Mary - thanks for stopping by and for the encouragement. I'm struggling. And I didn't think I would be at this stage. Couldn't write last night at all, even with my magic gloves, maybe they're broken. I took my laptop to work with me today and after my shift I made myself sit in my office and write. It was great because my laptop couldn't connect with the network at work so there was no way I could surf. Just me and the four walls. I managed to get my words for today but I haven't yet made up yesterdays.

Did you find your gloves? Hopefully you have the magic tonight. Hang in there NaNo buddy!

Hello! Yes I read "Any Given Doomsday" from the Early Reviewer program. I did enjoy it, even though normally I'm not a fan of romance-type fiction.

mamachunk
I'm rather fond of Howling Moon, but that was the first one I read too. :)
That sounds great. If by a miracle I ever do make it out there I'll let you know. Thanks!
I recommend http://www.librarything.com/series/Tales... for more paranormal romance. :)
I live just outside of Greenville in Northern South Carolina (LOL). It's a beautiful area but the last few years we've been in a drought. Although you wouldn't know that with the rain we got on Wednesday! I've always wanted to see California and the Pacific Northwest...
Thanks! It's a fantastic collection, I hope you enjoy it.
Hey! Read your comment about the card with "Mr. White's Confession" by Robert Clark. I would like to try and get a copy if you would be willing to share the contact info...or pass along my info. to them. Thanks!
Thanks, Mary

I look forward to reading your opinion of it. Think I'm going to begin my 50 reading list soon.

Teresa
Hi, Mar--

Gargoyle is on my "Buy" list, but don't know when I'll get around to actually purchasing it. but definitely intend to get it.

Joyce
Hi Mary,

Hopped over here to see if you had posted a review for Gargoyle. I've heard about it and am intrigued and if you liked it...

Had a nasty stomach virus this weekend, which put a crimp in my reading. Didn't feel like reading thing. Hope to get back to Poisonwood Bible today.

My best,

Teresa
Gargoyle? No--haven't even heard of it! sounds like it's worth investigating, right? :-)

Joyce
Mary: when you start reading the Marshal Guarnaccia series by Nabb, make sure you start at the beginning of the series, with Death of an Englishman. DON'T start in the middle. the first books are good in their own right and slowly introduce Guarnaccia as the main protagonist. It seems to me that Nabb started off not exactly knowing who would wind up being the protagonist, but it isn't until the 4th book that he emerges as the one. Also, you get to follow his family through the years, and they are important to the books.

This really is a series to be relished, book by book, as Nabb just gets better and better. Yet there is nothing wrong with the first books. so do yourself and Magdalen a huge favor by starting at the beginning! :-)

Joyce
Re: 50 book challenge. Well, you caught me. No 50 book challenge. As I mentioned, I'm only a a couple of months into using LT. I haven't finished cataloguing my library yet! I think I will try the 50 book challenge eventually, but I find the public nature of it bit intimidating. I've kept book journal many times, but online, for all to see? Yikes!

But let's see...over the past few weeks I've read (since late July?): The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher (I wrote to you about that one, right?) and A Summer of Hummingbirds: Love, Art, and Scandal in the Intersecting Worlds of Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Martin Johnson Heade (both fine, interesting in their ways, but I wasn't bowled over by either of them); reread Huckleberry Finn; read all four of the Philosophy Club series by Alexander McCall Smith (good, quick reads while traveling, which we did this month to visit family); March and The Year of the Book, both by Geraldine Brooks ( enjoyed both, but thought modern portions of YotB were clunky and didn't see the Pulitzer in March); Coraline (nice little youth gothic horror story); and just finished Ex Libris, which I loved and will definitely read again. I've just started Poisonwood Bible (been on my TBR list for years) and am going to give the online book group a try, and when my daughter goes back to school later this week, I'm going to start reading The Iliad. I've decided to use two translations (one for accuracy and one for dramatic understanding) and someone recommended a Companion to the Illiad that should guide me along.

I usually read about 50-60 books a year, but as my daughter gets older I've noticed that the number seems to be increasing. Luckily, she's a reader, too and we often sit together outside and read.

Your "train party" sounds like it was great fun. We spent the afternoon with friends, also. I am so sorry to see the summer end, though I do love the fall here! Hope all is well in sunny Southern Cal.

My Best,

Teresa
You know, it's so funny, Mary, but I truly believe that events happen when they're supposed to. So I'm glad that this one happened for you. Actually, I could say the same thing--I reread this book at a good time in my life for doing so!.

Joyce
Mary, for what it's worth, I just put up the full review of The seven Storey Mountain.
