Lovely books! Enjoy them (and don't be too strict on yourself - I'm seven days into the year and no books bought yet and it's getting difficult!)

Happy New Year
My copy of Sir Charles Grandison is an Oxford paperback, isbn0 19 281745 0, pub1986. There is a 3 vol. hardbound set that was published by oxford in 1972.
Right now I'm reading 'The Eustace Diamonds' by Trollope. I moderated a 'classic' book group for our local library and that is the January selection. Some of the books we read this year; King Solomon's mines, Evelina, The mayor of Casterbridge, The Scarlet Pimpernal, Hunchback of Norte Dame, Green Mansions, Dracula and Rob Roy.
As for this year, my wife and I have found the retirement 'house of our dreams' in the southern part of the state. A log home with app.25 acres, surrounded by woods, and no neighbors. I going to start reading Dumas,Ainsworth and Scott in the order of their publication.

ps. Maude is my favorite translator of Russian literature, did you know the Maude's have writen books about their lives with Tolstoy?

Hi Steve, Ah yes Nigel Tranter, a good choice. yes I read Clarissa, but I prefered 'Sir Charles Grandison' however that didn't stop me from buying a newer copy of Clarissa. As for Tolstoy there is a new translation by Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky and a translation by Andrew Bromfield, that states 'the orginal version that never was published in Tolstoy's lifetime. Who is the translator of the book you're going to read? I've read the Pevear & Volokhonsky translation of 'The Idiot" by Dostoevsky, at the begining of the month and really enjoyed it.

Hi Steve
It's nice to see another Sir Walter Scott fan out there. I think book buying should be classed as a proper addiction, I need to do it to function properly! And there is always the hope that I'll win the lottery and be able to spend all my time reading them.
