Tietoja minusta Retired chemist living in the country of Panama with partner, 3 dogs and 2 kittens. We live in a rural area on 3 acres that I am slowly turning into a small "subsistence" farm--at least the way subsistence farms are thought of in Latin America. Bougainvillea-obsessed. Have discovered digital photography and video recording--enthusiastic amateur but that's it--I'll never be a YouTube star.

Tietoja kirjastostani Fairly eclectic. Right now, concentrating heavily on the American Civil War, a fascination I've had for over 50 years, and the Pulitzer Prize winners for fiction. Heavy into mysteries, history. A small collection of Brasilian, other literature in Portugese. I'm also adding books in Spanish in order to improve my literacy in the language.

I know what you mean, Joyce. It's wonderful that so many people are discovering LT, but having to wade through so many posts can get a bit, um, intimidating? Even if you skim through the posts. I haven't even looked at this week's "What are you Reading" thread yet because it got so long so quickly while I was on vacation. I figure I'll look at it this weekend when I have a block of free time. Also, I got to hanging around LT so much in the past few months that my reading volume fell way off, so now I'm reading more and going on LT less, and right now that's a good thing.

I'm almost finished with Fingersmith, and I am not sure yet what I think of it. In turns it has been both engrossing and kind of meh ~ I'm in a "meh" place now, which is why I guess I got right into the new Sookey Stackhouse and gobbled it down last night. Tonight, though, I'm going to finish Fingersmith, no matter what! Goals are good to have, ya know? ;-D
I haven't seem Pan's Labrynth but have been wanting to. One of these days, I'm going to have a movie matathon of all the films I've been wanting to see but haven't had a chance. It may stretch into a week. I'm still waiting to watch the DVD of Serenity, which I bought over a month ago. Too busy reading books. :) BTW, the image of the red door is one I took a few years ago in the Bay Area. It's actually a bunker not far from the Golden Gate Bridge where I guess during WWII they stored munitions.

Anyway, thanks again for the friend request. Like lindsacl, I am honored.
I know what you mean about some of the threads. My group participation has changed considerably over the past year. I used to spend most of my time in "What are you Reading Now" but now, less so. I am more active in groups that share a specific interest: Reading Globally, Girlybooks (books by/about women), and Virago Modern Classics (a publisher focused on preserving and promoting work by women, often very talented women who did not get appropriate "press" in their day). I find the conversations in these groups to be more focused, and it's easier to get to know the participants. I have a 50 Book Challenge thread, and really like the "chat thread" in that group because I see it helping to bond the membership there, as well.

I've met some really interesting people on LT, and of course my TBR pile has reached mountain status and someday will probably become an entire mountain range, but I don't care! :-)
Thanks for the friend request Joyce! I am honored!

How funny ~ for some reason, I thought we were already friends. Thanks for making it official. lol
I am finding the "What Are You Reading Now" threads to be a little daunting. There are so many people on there that I am having a hard time following along. I do try to post to the weekly reading thread, but I have been negligent the past few weeks. I should at least go back and do that. =)

I also just joined "Girlybooks" and "Reading Globally" and hope to delve more into these groups after I finish "Orange July" (my personal commitment to read books that have won or been nominated for the Orange Prize).

I hope you're doing well!

Take care!
Jill
Joyce - I know exactly what you mean about re-reading A Song of Ice and Fire! I actually started about a month ago, then decided I didn't want to get to the end of A Feast for Crows and then have a wait of any length of time until I could get A Dance with Dragons. And now that you've told me about September 30th, I've started trying to plan backward to know exactly when to start A Game of Thrones to be done at the perfect time. I'm really shocked that a series of books has captured my attention in such a way. I hope all is well with you - I've been so busy at work and with summer that my blog reading has basically been put aside for the time being.
