Well, they have a good deal in common, don't they? Both in terms of their talent and style, and their personalities. And of course their stubbornness.

Both of them are good seconds, excel at handling a rearguard, tend to be kind of volatile (Hephaistion and Eumenes, Ney and Massena), and are marked by their ability to govern provinces and settle civilian problems well (Hephaistion at Sidon, Ney in Switzerland), etc.

You've picked some of my favorite Alexander fiction! I particularly like Lord of the Two Lands, though nobody does Alexander like Renault. Fascinating how many people seem to be interested in both Hephaistion and Ney, though it's only a logical connection if you look at it a certain way.
