Just noticed your post to the ER thread saying you'd received Weaving a Way Home. I got it too and I'm about a third into it; I'll be interested in reading your review.
Women of Mystery seems to have ground to a bit of a halt; I'm not sure what new topics to introduce. If you can think of any, feel free!
:)

Sorry it's taken me a while to reply to you; for some reason I hadn't noticed your messages. I'm glad you joined Women of Mystery; please feel free to post, if you haven't already. Thanks also for the recommendations -- I'm particularly curious about Sarah Caudwell and Carol O'Connell (who has been recommended to me by several people). Do either of them write graphic books? I don't really care for too scary or too violent. How do they rate next to Laurie R. King and Elizabeth George? I noticed you have several of Sarah Dunant's books too; have you ever read her mysteries?
Thanks,
Avis (aka avisannschild)

I noticed you had added my library to your "interesting" list. I checked yours out and, based on the books we share, feel it would be good to return the favor.
I apologize for not acknowledging you much sooner.

Just received Anthony and Cleopatra yesterday, but will not have time to read it right away.

James Sallis and Megan Abbot write very atmospheric noir, and Joe Hill is a new author who just floored me this past year with his ghost stories.
I agree... I adore Ian Rankin's wonderful John Rebus mysteries where the city of Edinburgh is as strong of a character as any of the people. Have you read any of Jon Burdett's wonderful "Bangkok" mysteries? His wonderful descriptions of the far east, Bhuddism and culture are a wonder to behold.

I am doing a TBR Challenge this year. I have picked twelve books out of my TBR pile that have been there longer then six months and an alternate list of twelve. Have you heard of this one? One of the books that I picked was A Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett. I am determined that at some point this year I am going to make my way through it!
The books are really piling up and I have a huge stack of books I want to read "next." However, my reading has been slow due to general busyness. I am getting married in April, also and am scrambling to get that put together too!
Hope all is well with you!
Nichole

My wife & I are just coming out from a long bout of some kinda flu and 2 weeks of holiday company. I hope Santa treated you well, I received an armload of books (Rome, ACW, Napoleonics, WWI, WWII, scifi)…which I’m currently plowing through. Among them were several from the “print on demand” publishers which provide hard to find monographs (WWI in East Africa). I received & read that old classic GOSHAWK SQUADRON by Derek Robinson (better than BLUE MAX to me). Adrian Goldsworth’s CANNAE is a quick read. Sloan’s ULTIMATE BATTLE (Okinawa) is a collection of oral history anecdotes not an operational study but a good one of that genre. I recommend the new STALINGRAD by Michael Jones, lots of new research & analysis incorporated (and corrects some myths along the way). I also finished McCullough’s final Masters of Rome volume: ANTONY & CLEOPATRA, not up to her others in my opinion. Also the newest from Dan Abnett’s “Gaunt’s Ghosts” series, ONLY in DEATH, gripping space opera! I was also surprised to find that my (American) football team, the Redskins, somehow slipped into the playoffs. We’ll see how long that lasts! Well, I’ll be interested in checking to see what yall have added to your collections. I hope 2008 is a banner year for stocking your shelves with goodies. Regards from a damp Maryland, Ammianus

Not sure what's going on with profile headings, sounds like that's accidental.
The exchange rate is getting better for you, but the prices here are still horrendous. We just came back from Paris, and that seems reasonable compared to London.
Off to Germany for New Years...
Have a Happy New Year!

Thanks for the note about Anthony and Cleopatra--it's good to hear that McCullough is back! the Masters of Rome series is a hard act to follow, especially since Caesar is a lot more appealing character than she ever made Antony out to be.
I hope that you and all your loved ones, including your wonderful animal family, have an excellent hoiliday season.

Right now I am reading Burning Bright by Tracey Chevalier. Very good so far. I recently finished The Stolen Child and it was amazing. Highly recommend that one! Other recent reads were Wheel of Darkness by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, World Without End by Ken Follett, and Thursday Next by Jasper Fforde. I have to say that although my numbers arent high...my quality is more then excellent. I havent been disappointed with a book in a long time!
Hope you and your family have a happy and safe holiday! Hope you get lots of books! :o)
Take Care

Thanks for adding me to your Interesting Libraries list. I browsed your tags on music--well, clearly you HAVE to be a flute player! How interesting! How long have you been one? I tried cello years ago and never was able to get a good teacher where I lived--gave it up, sold my instrument when I moved. But I do love music.
Yes, mysteries and historical fiction--big overlap--are a really large part of my library and always expanding. I am a BIG fan of Colleen McCullough and Laurie King as I see you are--also Arturo Perez-Reverte. After reading in your "Comments" about the new book from Perez-Reverte, I've added that to my wish list. I just wish more of his books were translated from Spanish.
LibraryThing has been a godsend for me, putting me in touch with quite a few people and of course books I never dreamed existed. So it's always fun to hear from someone new and look through yet another library!

Don't you just love this site though. I met recently a woman in Czechoslovakia who just had a book published which I am awaiting. She alerted me to this blog, www.dovegreyreader.typepad.com, a wonderful literary blog. She must speed read because she gets through more books in a week than I ever could and I read fast. I have already ordered many books on her recommendation.
I also acquired "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" and have been trying to acquire, not to mention read, more of those. I counted and I have only read 157 of them. I have no intention of reading them all but they do short reviews of each book and some of these reviews have piqued my interest.
Well do keep in touch.
Cheers.

Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries - I see we have a lot of books in common. Just in case you didn't know, there's a new Perez-Reverte book coming out soon, "The Painter of Battles", looks like it's out in early October in UK.
