NetGalley has published a Book Kit - review of the actual book coming soon.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Tonya Dalton for receiving the Joy of Missing Out Book Kit in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving this kit.

For the last year or so, NetGalley has been providing Book Kits. Each one of these kits is unique and centred around the book, some include author interviews, book club questions, all kinds of things to deepen your understanding of the material. Sometimes, these are great additions if it is your turn in book club, or, just a fun take away - however you want to look at it.

I really enjoyed the Joy of Missing Out Book Kit. The book itself is about feeling overwhelmed and feeling like crap at the end of the day because you didn’t accomplish an almost impossible list of things you have to do every day. I mean, who doesn’t need help around that!.

The kit is set up with a Reading Plan, some tips on how to make more time for reading and a Glossary of Terms that Dalton uses. Then it goes through each chapter with exercises and questions that you can use as a discussion in a group setting, or just to ponder if you are on your own. I really like the way each chapter was set up and offering enough unique things to make it interesting. Some had mind maps, lists, journalling ideas. There were essential quotes from each chapter and a key take away.

For a book like Joy of Missing Out, this book kit was almost like a workbook companion that you might purchase alongside the book itself. I found it comprehensive and helps lay out your thoughts and feelings around these issues that will help highlight where you might need some help. I think that I will actually write my answers down in a notebook so that I can re-visit this and do it again say in six months or a year. Just a neat way to see if I actually improved on anything but also because as life changes, your answers will change.

All in all, I highly recommend downloading this Book Kit and if you aren’t a member of NetGalley and enjoy reading and reviewing books, you should look into becoming a member. It’s easy to get started and you just have to commit to reviewing each book you read. There’s only one huge issue that it seems a lot of my book friends, and I’m including myself in this, that fall down the rabbit hole of wanting to request everything and watching your TBR list grow and grow. I wonder if there is a self help book on that!

I assessed my priorities and life values and mission statement, and finishing this book doesn't align with my North Star, so back to the library it goes.

I don't normally read this kind if the book - I'm a nonfiction person. But I know the company and when it offered a free copy for pre-release I wasn't going to turn down a free book. I have nerd cred to keep up.

Not in book form, but I do make a professional study of productivity and planning methods. I'm ambitious and if there's a way to work better and smarter count me in. Rather have skills you don't need then lack those you do.

But this book was far more about finding what you're even working to and that made it better. There are a hundred means of going through email faster or finding out what issues do or don't need meetings. If you look up the best way to write a list you'll be crushed under an avalanche.

Not that real advice about those things isn't here to. But they aren't the point. The point is figuring out the (for the moment) end game of all this. All the little tricks in the world mean nothing if you don't actually have some overarching goal it's all directed to. And getting clarity to that point is the point.

So don't look for me to read a great many more books in this category - my science and history won't read themselves - but this is a good one. And a helpful one. And we need more like it.

One small note: it talks about the experience of many women, and for a reason, but facing challenges, overcoming hardship and keeping your eye on your goals and future really applies to anyone. Life pulls punches for no one. If you feel like the whole goal/focus part of your life is fuzzy give it a shot. It will get you nicely on the path to much clearer efforts. Woman or no.

Let me start out by saying that Joy of Missing Out completed the task it set out to do. However, it was not the type of book I thought I was reading and that is on me for not paying closer attention to the synopsis. I knew it was a play on FOMO which has become quite a popular phrase in our society. I thought it was going to be strategies to help us to enjoy our daily lives, but it was definitely geared more towards women who own their own business or want to start their own business. The author is an entrepreneur and productivity expert and has good advice for coming up with your goals, vision, mission statement, how to be productive without missing out on what really matters, etc.

Now, don't get me wrong. I walked away with some nuggets to think about for my own life even though I don't think I was the intended audience. In this multi-tasking world we live in, she made me think a lot about the idea of being effective versus being efficient. I also really liked her reference to million dollar moments in her life. She considers those to be the really important parts of her day. She used the example of the ten minutes every morning she enjoys with just her husband. That is a million dollar moment to her because that is time in her day she would give a million dollars to get have again.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
